Chapter 5 - THE CONFRONTATION AT TOWER STERLING

"They set me up," I whispered, my knuckles turning white against the edge of the table.

"Yes," Valerie said. "I found out yesterday that they were planning to complete the transfer right after the vows. I couldn't let them do to you what they did to me, Clara. I tried to confront Julian outside the chapel, but he threatened to cut off my medical living allowance if I spoke to you."

"And Grandma Evelyn?" I asked. "How much does she know?"

"Grandma Evelyn is the only person in that family with a conscience," Valerie said softly. "She watched what they did to me three years ago. Eleanor keeps her isolated at the estate, controlling her medication and visitors. Evelyn has been trying to warn Julian's targets for years, but Eleanor always stops her."

I leaned back against the booth, my mind racing with a cold, sharp fury I had never felt before in my life.

For three years, I had loved a monster. I had believed his sweet words, trusted his gentle touches, and defended his overbearing mother. I had almost walked down the aisle to sign away my freedom, my career, and my family's reputation.

Maya walked over from the counter, setting a hand on my shoulder. "Clara, what are we doing? We can call the police right now."

"No," I said, my voice dangerously calm. "The police won't act fast enough on financial paper trails. The Sterlings have high-priced lawyers who will bury this before sunrise."

I looked at Valerie. "Where are Julian and Eleanor right now?"

Valerie checked her phone. "Their corporate legal team always meets at the executive suite at Tower Sterling after major family events to finalize paperwork. If the wedding failed today, they'll be trying to execute a emergency contingency plan before the banks open on Monday."

I stood up, pulling my coat tight around myself. "Then that's where we're going."

"Clara, wait!" Maya said, wide-eyed. "You can't just barge into Tower Sterling! They have private security!"

"Julian thinks I'm sitting in a corner crying, heartbroken over a ruined wedding," I said, my dark eyes flashing with resolve. "He thinks I'm weak. He thinks I'm naive. He's expecting me to call him back, begging for an explanation."

I snatched the documents off the table, tucking them securely into my coat.

"Let's go show him who he actually tried to destroy."

Thirty minutes later, the rain was pouring down heavily over the sleek glass skyscraper of Tower Sterling downtown.

The front lobby was quiet, guarded by two midnight-shift security officers.

I walked through the revolving glass doors, flanked by Maya and Valerie. I was no longer wearing sweatpants; I had stopped at Maya's apartment to change into a crisp black tailored suit, my hair pulled back into a tight, professional bun.

The security guard at the desk stood up. "Miss... Miss Clara? We were told—"

"Get out of my way, Arthur," I said, my voice ringing with an authority that made the guard flinch. I knew Arthur; I had brought him coffee every time I visited Julian at the office.

"Miss Clara, Mr. Sterling gave strict orders that no one—"

"If you press that security panic button, Arthur," I said, leaning over the marble desk and staring him down, "I will ensure your name is listed as an accomplice in the SEC indictment that will hit this building by nine o'clock tomorrow morning."

Arthur's hand hovered over the button. He looked at my icy, calm expression, then at Valerie Mercer standing behind me. He swallowed hard and slowly withdrew his hand.

"Elevator six," Arthur whispered, looking away. "Keycard is already active for the penthouse floor."

"Thank you, Arthur," I said smoothly.

We stepped into the elevator. I pressed the button for the 40th floor.

As the doors closed, watching the floor numbers light up one by one, my heart beat steady and strong.

The scared bride was dead.
