Chapter 3 - The Midnight Trail

By 3:30 AM, Lily had fallen back into a light sleep, her head resting against Damen’s chest as he sat propped up against the padded headboard of the guest bed. He didn't dare move, allowing his arm to grow slightly numb rather than risk waking her again.

Marcus knocked softly on the open door frame, holding his tablet. Damen raised an eyebrow, signaling for an update.

Marcus stepped inside on quiet feet, his voice barely a murmur. "The black sedan dropped off its passenger at a private medical-tech warehouse near the riverfront. It's an unlisted facility owned by a subsidiary of Voss Dynamics."

Damen's jaw set. "Is Sophia inside?"

"High probability," Marcus nodded. "Thermal imagery from our drone flyby shows four active heat signatures inside the main office block. No local police activity, no emergency calls. They're keeping her off the books."

"What do they want from her?"

"A cryptographic key," Marcus answered, displaying a file on the tablet. "According to old server logs from Voss Dynamics, before Sophia vanished three years ago, she was the head administrator for Project Aegis—a high-level bio-data storage program. When she left, she initiated a hard lock on their primary research servers. Victor Voss hasn't been able to access his own proprietary formulas for thirty-six months."

Damen's eyes narrowed. "And without those formulas, Voss Dynamics can't complete its merger with European investors. That's why he's going broke. That's why he was forced to entertain my takeover bid."

"Exactly," Marcus said. "Voss pulled the trigger tonight because he knew your acquisition was going through next week. Once you own the company, your forensic accountants would have found the locked servers anyway. He needed Sophia to give him the override key before he lost control of the firm."

Damen looked down at Lily's dark hair resting against his shirt.

Sophia had spent three years working as a low-wage janitor, sweeping the very floors where her tormentor’s financial rival sat, waiting for the right moment to use that leverage—or simply trying to survive in the shadow of a corporate war.

"Marcus," Damen said quietly. "Prepare the private security detail. Eight men. Suppressed gear. Non-lethal entry options."

Marcus paused, staring at his boss. "Damen... if we raid a Voss facility, we're stepping over a massive legal line. If Victor Voss calls the authorities, it’s a corporate raid. It could sink Cole Global’s stock price overnight."

"Victor Voss won't call the police," Damen replied coldly. "Because if he calls the police, I hand over Sophia's note, the hallway footage of his mercenaries, and the forensic proof that he kidnapped a mother from my building. He loses everything by sunrise."

"And if he doesn't cooperate?"

Damen’s eyes burned with a hard, unyielding light. "Then I buy his company at 6:00 AM, fire him at 6:01 AM, and have him thrown in federal prison by noon."

Marcus let out a slow breath, a faint smile touching his lips. "I'll assemble the team. What about the girl?"

Damen looked at Lily, who stirred slightly, clutching his hand in her sleep.

"She stays here under full guard," Damen said. "I want two armed operators outside this bedroom door, two at the elevator bank, and the penthouse perimeter locked down on level-five protocol. If anyone comes near this floor who isn't on my personal payroll, drop them."

"Understood."

Damen carefully eased himself out from under Lily, substituting a soft wool pillow for his arm. He stood up, smoothing his shirt, and stepped out into the hallway.

For thirty-eight years, Damen Cole had measured his worth by balance sheets, stock valuations, and the quiet satisfaction of total control. He had never fought for anything that didn't have a dollar sign attached to it.

Now, looking back into the dimly lit bedroom at a sleeping three-year-old girl who had trusted him with her mother's life, he realized that everything he had built was just coal waiting to be burned in a furnace.

He walked into his master dressing room, stripped off his expensive dress shirt, and pulled a dark tactical turtleneck and heavy jacket from his private safe room storage.

"Let's go get her mother," Damen said.
