Chapter 7 - The Unseen Ledger

By noon, the news of Victor Voss’s sudden arrest had sent shockwaves through the financial markets.
Cole Global's press office had issued a brief, devastating statement detailing the forensic evidence of corporate espionage, illegal surveillance, and criminal conspiracy uncovered during the takeover negotiations. Voss Dynamics' stock crashed by sixty-five percent in three hours, allowing Damen’s legal team to execute a total buyout before the closing bell.
Inside the quiet sanctuary of the penthouse, however, the financial storm felt a million miles away.
Sophia sat at the polished granite kitchen counter, wearing a comfortable oversized sweater provided by Damen’s staff. Lily sat beside her on a high stool, her face smeared with chocolate pancake batter, happily swinging her small legs back and forth.
Damen walked into the kitchen, wearing a simple linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up—a rare sight that Marcus Vance had stared at for three straight minutes when he delivered the morning briefing.
"How are the pancakes?" Damen asked, leaning against the counter.
"They're good!" Lily beamed, holding up a sticky fork. "Damen made them have ears!"
"I attempted to make a bear," Damen corrected with a faint, amused smile. "The execution was flawed."
Sophia laughed—a clear, light sound that seemed to chase away the last remaining shadows from the night before. "It looked like a bear to her, Damen. That's all that counts."
Marcus entered the room quietly, holding a secure leather folder. He gave Sophia a polite nod before turning to Damen.
"Federal prosecutors have officially unsealed the indictment against Victor Voss," Marcus reported. "Project Aegis data has been secured under protective custody. Your legal team has filed for full immunity for Sophia regarding her initial removal of the files three years ago."
Sophia lowered her fork, her expression turning cautious. "Will I have to testify?"
"Only via deposition," Marcus reassured her. "The paper trail Voss left behind is so thick that your testimony will simply be the final nail in his coffin. You're completely clear, Sophia. The alias is gone. Your real identity can be restored legally within thirty days."
Sophia let out a long, quiet breath, her shoulders sagging as three years of constant, agonizing fear finally melted off her back.
"What will you do now?" Damen asked her softly.
Sophia looked around the bright, sunlit penthouse, then down at her daughter's happy, sticky face.
"I don't know," she admitted honestly. "I've spent three years thinking about tomorrow. I haven't thought about next week in a very long time."
Damen reached into his pocket and pulled out a small set of keys, laying them gently on the counter beside her plate.
"Cole Global has a corporate housing estate in the northern suburbs," Damen said. "It’s a three-bedroom house near a park, with a fenced yard and top-tier security. It’s yours for as long as you need it. Rent-free."
Sophia stared at the keys, her eyes filling with tears again. "Damen... I can't take that from you. You've already done too much."
"It's not a gift, Sophia," Damen said, his tone firm but warm. "It's a relocation package. Because as of 9:00 AM this morning, Cole Global's facilities department has been restructured. I need a Director of Facilities Management who actually knows how this building runs from the ground up."
Sophia blinked in shock. "Director? Damen, I was a janitor!"
"You were a lab administrator with a degree in organizational logistics who worked as a janitor to protect her daughter," Damen corrected smoothly. "You're more qualified for the job than the last three executives I hired."
Lily looked up from her plate, sensing her mother's emotion. She reached out and patted Sophia's arm. "It's okay, Mommy. Damen is the boss man. He fixes things."

Damen looked at Lily, a soft, genuine smile breaking across his face.
"Yes, Lily," Damen said softly. "I suppose I do."
