Chapter 5 - The Reckoning

Victor Voss backed away toward the desk, his knuckles white around the grip of his pistol. His heart was hammering against his ribs so hard he could barely breathe.

"Cole..." Voss stammered, his arrogant posture collapsing into blind panic. "This... this is an illegal entry! You're trespassing on private corporate property! My security team—"

"Your security team is asleep on the floor outside," Marcus interrupted, stepping into the room and aiming a red laser sight directly at the center of Voss's forehead. "Drop the weapon, Victor. You have roughly three seconds before I make a permanent career decision for you."

Voss looked at Marcus, then at the three armed operators blocking the doorway, and finally at Damen Cole.

Damen stood unmoved, looking at Voss not with anger, but with the utter disgust one reserves for a minor inconvenience that had overstepped its bounds.

Slowly, Voss's fingers uncurled. The silver pistol clattered onto the hardwood floor. Marcus stepped forward instantly, kicking the weapon away and forcing Voss down onto his knees, pulling his arms behind his back to secure him with heavy plastic flex-cuffs.

Damen walked straight past Voss, completely ignoring him, and knelt down in front of Sophia.

He pulled a small pocket knife from his coat and carefully sliced through the plastic zip-ties securing her wrists to the metal chair.

"Are you alright?" Damen asked, his tone shifting instantly from icy command to quiet concern.

Sophia clutched her wrists, her skin raw and red, her chest heaving as she looked at Damen in utter disbelief. She had spent three years hiding, three years fearing this exact night, only to have the most powerful corporate mogul in the city burst through the door to save her.

"Lily..." Sophia gasped, tears finally spilling over her bruised cheeks. "Where is my baby? Did you find her? Did they—"

"She's safe," Damen interrupted gently, taking her trembling hands in his. "She's at my penthouse. She ate some food, she's warm, and she's sleeping in my guest room under armed guard."

Sophia choked back a sob, bowing her head against Damen's hands. "Thank you... oh God, thank you, Mr. Cole..."

"Call me Damen," he said softly.

He stood up, helping her to her feet, and turned to face Victor Voss, who was sitting on the floor cursing softly under his breath.

"You're ruined, Victor," Damen said, looking down at him. "At 8:00 AM, the Securities and Exchange Commission will receive an anonymous package containing the encrypted server logs from Project Aegis, along with the kidnapping charges filed directly with the State Attorney General."

"You can't prove anything!" Voss spat, glaring up at him. "It's my word against a low-level custodian's!"

Damen pulled his phone from his pocket, touching the screen to display a live feed from the hallway camera of Meridian Tower showing Voss's mercenary escorting Sophia through the stairwell door.

"I don't rely on words, Victor," Damen said coldly. "I rely on evidence. You tried to steal a mother from her child in my building. I am going to buy your company for pennies on the dollar, liquidate its physical assets, and use the proceeds to fund an endowment for children's legal defense."

Voss went completely silent, the full weight of his total financial and personal destruction finally settling over him.

"Marcus," Damen said, turning toward the door. "Hand Voss over to the federal authorities when they arrive at the perimeter. Make sure his lawyer understands that bail will be contested on extreme flight-risk grounds."

"Understood, boss," Marcus nodded.

Damen turned back to Sophia, offering her his arm. "Let's go home, Sophia. Your daughter is waiting for you."
