Chapter 3 - The Bloodline Secret

A wave of loud, shocked whispers erupted across the ballroom like a sudden gust of wind.

"Julian?" Vanessa gasped, her head snapping toward her father. "Dad, what is she talking about?! Julian wouldn't touch a girl like this!"

"Silence!" Richard shouted at his daughter, his eyes fixed on Abigail. His hands were shaking so violently that he dropped his handkerchief onto the wet marble floor. "Sarah Foster... Sarah was the head archivist at our East Hampton estate twenty years ago..."

"And Julian," Abigail continued, her voice devoid of fear, "met me at the public library where I worked nine months ago. He didn't tell me he was a Sinclair at first. He called himself Jules. We saw each other for two months. When I found out I was pregnant, I showed him the test."

Abigail took a deep, shuddering breath, her hand resting over her baby.

"He told me his father—you, Richard—would disown him if he brought a broke, orphaned girl into the Sinclair family. He offered me money to end the pregnancy. When I refused, he threatened to have me evicted. Two days later, his jet went down."

The ballroom was so quiet you could hear the rain tapping against the high stained-glass windows of the Astoria.

Matteo Romano turned his head slowly, looking at Richard Sinclair. The terrifying intelligence in Matteo’s eyes was already assembling the pieces of the puzzle.

"Julian died seven months ago," Matteo said quietly, his voice dangerously smooth. "He had no legal wife. No children. Which meant his entire personal estate—and his thirty percent voting share in Sinclair Global Logistics—was set to pass automatically to his sister, Vanessa."

Matteo stepped closer to Richard, his dark eyes locking onto the older man's panicked gaze.

"Unless," Matteo continued, "he left an heir."

Vanessa’s face went from pale to completely ash-gray. "That's absurd! A maid's daughter showing up seven months after my brother's death claiming her bastard is a Sinclair?! She's lying! She's a gold-digger trying to scam my family!"

"She's not lying," Richard whispered, his voice completely hollow.

"Dad?!" Vanessa shrieked.

"Julian came to my office the week before he died," Richard said, his eyes filled with a desperate, terrified dark energy. "He told me he had made a mistake. He told me there was a girl... a Foster girl... who was carrying his child. He asked me to help him set up a trust fund in secret. I told him he was insane. I told him a bastard child would destroy our family's reputation during the merger with the European transport group!"

Richard looked at Abigail, his expression turning cold, calculating, and ruthless.

"I paid Julian's personal assistant to keep her away from the funeral," Richard admitted coldly. "I made sure her name was blacklisted from every major real estate agency in Manhattan so she couldn't secure a stable lease. I thought if she was broke enough, she would quietly give the child up for adoption or leave the state."

A collective gasp of disgust rippled through the gathered billionaires. Even in a room filled with cutthroat capitalists, the revelation that a father had intentionally forced his own unborn grandchild into poverty to protect a corporate merger was stomach-turning.

Matteo Romano stared at Richard Sinclair for five long seconds.

Then, a dark, terrible smile spread slowly across Matteo's face.

"So," Matteo said softly, "to summarize..."

He turned to face the entire ballroom, raising his broad hands as if addressing a court.

"Eight years ago, this woman saved my sister’s life by giving her own blood in a cold hospital hallway, asking for nothing in return."

He gestured toward Vanessa and Richard.

"And seven months ago, the Sinclair family left her to starve in the cold, carrying the only living child of their deceased heir, while your daughter slapped her across the face for spilling a drop of alcohol on a silver dress."

Matteo’s smile vanished instantly, replaced by an expression of pure, unadulterated death.

"Geno," Matteo called out.

"Yes, boss?"

"Cancel the Sinclair shipping contracts at Port Newark. All of them. Effective immediately."

Richard Sinclair went rigid, his eyes bulging. "Matteo, no! You can't do that! That's forty percent of our East Coast freight volume! It will bankrupt Sinclair Logistics by the end of the quarter!"

"Then you had better start saving your money, Richard," Matteo said flatly. "Because starting tonight, you're going to need it."

Matteo turned back to Abigail. He reached down with both hands, taking her gently under her arms, assisting her to her feet with infinite care, making sure she was completely stable before releasing his hold.

Isabella stood beside her, wrapping a warm, ultra-soft white cashmere coat around Abigail’s shoulders, covering the wet, stained catering uniform.

"You're coming with us, Abigail," Isabella said gently, tucking a strand of dark hair behind Abigail's ear. "You're never going to work another shift in your life. You're never going to worry about rent, groceries, or medical bills ever again."

Abigail looked at the warm cashmere coat, then at Isabella's kind, tear-filled face, and finally up at Matteo Romano, who stood beside her like an impenetrable wall of steel.

"Mr. Romano..." Abigail whispered, tears finally overflowing her lashes. "I can't accept this... I didn't save your sister for money."

"I know you didn't," Matteo said, his voice dropping into a soft, fierce tone meant only for her ears. "That's why you're getting everything."

He offered her his arm.

Abigail hesitated for a single second before placing her hand over his dark wool sleeve.

As Matteo guided her slowly toward the grand double doors of the ballroom, every billionaire in Manhattan stepped back, clearing a wide, respectful path for the pregnant catering worker in the white cashmere coat.

Vanessa Sinclair stood paralyzed amidst the broken glass, her silver gown ruined, her face crimson with public humiliation, while her father collapsed into an armchair, clutching his chest as his empire began to crumble around him.

As they reached the exit, Matteo stopped, looking back over his shoulder at the ruined Sinclair family.

"One more thing, Richard," Matteo called out, his voice echoing across the grand hall. "Tomorrow morning, my legal team will file for full, exclusive custody recognition and estate auditing on behalf of Abigail Foster and her child. If a single penny of Julian's estate is moved before then, I won't just ruin your business. I'll personally tear down every house you own."

Without waiting for a response, Matteo guided Abigail out into the crisp, rain-washed Manhattan night, where a fleet of black armored SUVs stood waiting at the curb with their doors open.
