Chapter 5 - The Legal Ambush

At nine o'clock the following morning, the grand glass-and-steel skyscraper of the New York State Supreme Court building on Centre Street was surrounded by a wall of reporters, news vans, and flashing police lights.
The rumor of a massive legal war between the Romano family and the Sinclair dynasty had spread through Wall Street like wildfire.
Inside a private, high-ceilinged conference room on the twelfth floor, a confrontation of historic proportions was taking place.
Sitting on one side of the thirty-foot mahogany conference table was Richard Sinclair, flanked by Vanessa and six of the most expensive corporate defense attorneys in New York. Richard looked exhausted, dark circles under his eyes, his designer suit looking slightly rumpled. Vanessa sat beside him, wearing dark sunglasses inside the room, her arms crossed tightly over a cream designer suit, her jaw set in a bitter, defensive scowl.
On the other side of the table sat Abigail Foster.
She was dressed in an elegant, loose-fitting dark navy maternity dress made of fine wool, provided by Isabella. Her hair was pulled back into a neat, sophisticated knot, revealing her clear pale skin and the soft, remaining pink shadow on her cheek.
Beside her sat Matteo Romano.
He wore a dark three-piece suit, his broad frame dominating the room, his hand resting calmly on the table near Abigail’s arm. Flanking them were three senior partners from Moretti & Partners—the most ruthless, formidable estate and criminal litigation firm in the country.
"Let's be clear about why we're here," Richard's lead attorney, a silver-haired man named Arthur Vance, began, tapping his pen against a yellow notepad. "My clients are prepared to offer a generous, one-time lump-sum settlement of two million dollars to Miss Foster. In exchange, she will sign a full non-disclosure agreement, waive all future paternity claims against the estate of Julian Sinclair, and relocate outside the state of New York."
Vanessa smirked behind her dark sunglasses. "Consider it a charity gift."
Abigail didn't flinch. She looked directly at Vance, her voice quiet but remarkably steady. "I don't want your charity, Miss Sinclair."
Vance scoffed slightly. "Miss Foster, let's be pragmatic. Paternity cannot be established conclusively until the child is born and a court-ordered DNA match is performed against Julian's preserved medical archives. That process could take eighteen months of brutal litigation. You don't have the resources to fight a prolonged legal battle against Sinclair Global Logistics."
"She doesn't," Matteo Romano’s deep voice cut through the air like a broadsword. "But I do."
Matteo leaned forward, placing a thick, black leather folder on the center of the table and pushing it toward Vance.
"Open it," Matteo commanded flatly.
Vance frowned, exchanging a quick look with Richard before opening the folder. As his eyes scanned the first page, the silver-haired attorney's expression transformed from patronizing arrogance to sheer, unadulterated shock.
"What is this?" Vance gasped.
"That," Matteo said calmly, "is a certified copy of Julian Sinclair’s Swiss trust agreement, executed twenty-one days prior to his death. It explicitly names Abigail Foster’s unborn child as the sole beneficiary of his eighty-million-dollar private estate."
Richard slammed his hands on the table, standing up so fast his leather chair slid backward into the wall. "That document is a fraud! Julian was manipulated!"
"Read page four, Richard," Matteo instructed softly, leaning back in his chair.
Vance hurriedly flipped to page four, his hands beginning to visible shake. "Oh, God..."
"What is it?!" Vanessa demanded, ripping her sunglasses off her face. "Arthur, what does it say?!"
"Page four," Vance whispered, his face turning grey, "contains a signed affidavit from Julian's personal physician, accompanied by a pre-natal genetic profile drawn from an amniocentesis sample Julian submitted to a private clinic in Bern six weeks before his death. The DNA marker match to Miss Foster's maternal profile is already on file."
The room went dead silent.
The legal standing was absolute. There was no need for an eighteen-month court fight. The genetic match had already been established while Julian was alive, legally securing the unborn child's right to his eighty-million-dollar estate and his thirty percent controlling voting interest in Sinclair Global Logistics.
Vanessa looked as if she had been slapped. "No... no, that's impossible! Julian wouldn't do that to me! He knew I was taking over the company!"
"Julian knew you were driving the company into the ground, Vanessa," Abigail said, her eyes cold as she looked across the table at the woman who had struck her twelve hours earlier. "He told me you were siphon money into offshore accounts to cover your private trading losses. He set up this trust so his child’s future would be protected from you."
Richard looked like a man who had just received a fatal blow. "Matteo... please. We can reach a settlement. We can work out a voting trust structure for the company—"
"There is no settlement," Matteo interrupted, his voice dropping into a dark, razor-sharp register. "As of eight o'clock this morning, the Romano family acquired thirty-four percent of Sinclair Global Logistics' public debt notes through our primary holding company."
Richard’s mouth opened, but no sound came out.
"With Abigail's thirty percent estate control," Matteo continued, a cold, ruthless smile touching his lips, "and our debt holdings, we now hold the majority vote. Effective at noon today, Richard Sinclair is removed as Chief Executive Officer, and Vanessa Sinclair's board seat is revoked."
"You can't do this!" Vanessa screamed, standing up and pounding her manicured fists against the mahogany table. "You're ruining my family! You're stealing our company!"
"Your family ruined itself the second you raised your hand against a pregnant woman in front of four hundred witnesses," Matteo said, standing up slowly, his towering frame casting a massive shadow across the table. "Geno."
The heavy double doors of the conference room swung open.
Four uniformed officers from the New York Police Department’s Financial Crimes Division stepped into the room, led by a senior detective holding a stack of official arrest warrants.
"Richard Sinclair? Vanessa Sinclair?" the detective announced, stepping toward the pair. "You are both under arrest for grand larceny, securities fraud, and conspiracy to commit corporate asset stripping in connection with the Apex Investment fund."
Vanessa shrieked as the cold steel handcuffs clicked around her delicate wrists. "Dad! Do something! Call the governor! Call someone!"
Richard didn't move. He simply stared at the floor, his face devoid of life, as the officers led him and his screaming daughter out of the conference room in full view of the assembled press waiting in the hallway outside.
Abigail sat quietly in her chair, watching the door close behind them. Her chest rose and fell in a long, shuddering breath, the immense weight of eight months of fear, poverty, and isolation finally lifting off her shoulders.
Matteo walked over to her side, gently placing his hand over her shoulder.
"Are you alright?" he asked softly.
May you like
Abigail looked up into his dark, fierce eyes, her hand reaching up to cover his fingers.
"I think..." Abigail whispered, a genuine, beautiful smile breaking across her face for the first time in months, "for the first time in a very long time... I'm going to be just fine."
