Chapter 6 - The Shadow on the Docks

Two months passed.
The autumn leaves along the Hudson River turned into a brilliant canopy of deep gold, crimson, and burnt orange.
Under the care of the best medical specialists in New York, Abigail’s health transformed completely. Her pale, exhausted look was gone, replaced by the glowing radiance of a mother in her final month of pregnancy. Her days were spent in the quiet comfort of the Riverside penthouse, surrounded by books, exquisite meals, and the warm, unyielding sisterhood of Isabella, who had become her closest companion.
The Sinclair empire had officially collapsed.
Following the arrest of Richard and Vanessa Sinclair, federal prosecutors uncovered a massive network of offshore money laundering, corporate fraud, and illegal asset transfers. Sinclair Global Logistics was restructured under court supervision, with its primary maritime assets absorbed into Romano Maritime Holdings, creating the single largest logistics conglomerate on the East Coast.
Abigail's child was now the legal heir to a restructured ninety-million-dollar trust fund held in an untouchable Swiss bank.
Yet, despite her newfound safety and wealth, Abigail found herself drawn more and more to the man who had made it all possible.
Matteo Romano was a dangerous man—a titan who commanded armies of workers and enforced a cold, ruthless discipline across the city. But in the quiet evenings at the penthouse, when the heavy mahogany doors were closed and the rest of the world was shut out, Matteo was entirely different.
He was quiet, protective, and profoundly attentive.
He never spoke of his business in front of her. Every evening, no matter how chaotic his schedule was, Matteo returned to the penthouse by seven o'clock to share dinner with her and Isabella. He would sit by the roaring fire in the living room, listening with genuine interest as Abigail discussed her plans to launch a non-profit foundation for single mothers in New York once her baby was born.
One crisp November evening, as a light snowfall began to dust the city, Abigail sat in the penthouse library, wearing a soft cream cashmere sweater dress that comfortably stretched over her full, nine-month-pregnant belly.
The library doors pushed open softly, and Matteo walked in.
He looked tired, his dark suit jacket unbuttoned, his tie slightly loosened at his throat. The faint silver scar over his eyebrow stood out against his pale skin.
"You're up late," Matteo said softly, walking over to the fire and leaning against the stone mantlepiece, looking down at her with a gentle gaze.
"The baby is kicking," Abigail smiled, resting her hands over her stomach. "I think he knows he’s running out of room."
A rare, warm smile touched Matteo's lips. "He?"
"The ultrasound doctor confirmed it yesterday," Abigail revealed, her hazel eyes shining with happiness. "It's a boy."
Matteo’s expression softened into something deep, powerful, and unreadable. He walked over to her sofa, slowly sinking down onto the cushion beside her. He looked at her stomach, then up into her eyes, his large hand hovering inches above her lap.
"May I?" he asked, his voice a low, hesitant rumble.
Abigail smiled softly. She took his broad, calloused hand and gently placed it flat against the center of her belly.
Instantly, a strong, firm kick pressed against Matteo’s palm.
Matteo went completely still. The man who had faced down federal prosecutors, mob rivals, and corrupt politicians without blinking looked down at his broad palm in utter, breathless wonder.
"He's strong," Matteo whispered, his dark eyes wide with awe.
"He gets that from the people protecting him," Abigail said softly, her fingers lacing through Matteo's broad hand.
Matteo looked up from her stomach, his dark eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made Abigail’s breath catch in her throat.
"Abigail," Matteo murmured, his voice thick with raw emotion. "Eight years ago, you gave your blood to save my sister. You gave me back my family. I spent eight years looking for a ghost to pay a debt."
He reached out with his other hand, his thumb gently tracing the smooth line of her jawline where Vanessa’s strike had long since healed.
"I found a ghost," Matteo continued softly. "But in these last two months... I found the only woman I have ever wanted to keep."
Abigail’s heart pounded against her ribs—not with fear, but with a sudden, breathtaking heat that filled every corner of her chest.
"Matteo..." she whispered.
Before she could finish her sentence, the sharp, shrill ring of Matteo’s encrypted satellite phone broke the quiet intimacy of the room.
Matteo paused, his jaw tightening slightly before he pulled the phone from his inner suit pocket and pressed it to his ear. "Talk to me, Geno."
Geno’s voice came through the speaker, urgent, tense, and sharp. "Boss, we have a breach at the Brooklyn navy yard warehouse. A group of four men managed to bypass the outer gate using a stolen security code."
Matteo stood up instantly, his dark eyes hardening into pure iron. "Who are they?"
"It's mercenaries hired by Vanessa's private security team," Geno reported quickly. "They know the federal trial starts next week, and they're trying to destroy the original physical shipping logs we recovered from Apex Investments."
Matteo pulled his jacket tight over his broad shoulders. "Hold the perimeter. I’m on my way."
He snapped the phone shut, turning back to Abigail, his posture instantly reverting to the formidable leader of the Romano empire.

"Stay inside tonight," Matteo commanded gently, leaning down to press a soft, quick kiss against her forehead—a touch that sent shivers down her spine. "I’ll be back before dawn."
Abigail watched him walk out of the library, a sudden, cold sense of unease settling deep within her chest as the heavy mahogany doors clicked shut behind him.
