Chapter 5 - The Dragging of Ava Carlisle

A collective, gasp swept through the two hundred elite guests in the ballroom.
Reporters from the Chicago Tribune and CNBC immediately raised their high-resolution cameras, flashes strobing like lightning across the crystal chandeliers.
"Hostile trespasser?" Grant yelled, his face turning an angry, blotchy crimson. "This is ridiculous! Emma is my wife! This hospital bears my corporate sponsors’ logos! Sterling, call the police right now and have these thugs removed!"
Dr. Sterling pulled out his phone, his hands shaking, but before he could dial, his device rang in his palm. The caller ID read: BOARD OF TRUSTEES - CHAIRMAN.
Dr. Sterling answered it frantically. "Hello? Bill! We have an emergency in the main ballroom—"
He stopped speaking. The color drained from Dr. Sterling’s face until he looked like a corpse in a tuxedo.
"I... I understand," Dr. Sterling whispered slowly into the receiver. "Yes, sir. Immediately."
Dr. Sterling lowered his phone, looking at Grant as if the billionaire had suddenly transformed into radioactive waste.
"Grant..." Dr. Sterling stuttered, stepping three feet back from him. "The Board of Trustees... they just received an emergency injunction from the Chancery Court. The Hawthorne Trust has exercised its right to buy out the hospital’s primary mortgage. They... they own the hospital outright as of ten minutes ago."
Grant stared at the doctor in sheer, unadulterated disbelief. "They can't do that! That trust was a dormant legacy fund from her grandfather! It hasn't been active in twenty years!"
"It was reactivated at 2:30 AM this morning, Mr. Mercer," Marcus Vance interjected smoothly. "By your wife."
Marcus turned his head slightly, gesturing to two of the heavy tactical officers standing behind him.
"Remove the unauthorized personnel from the premises," Marcus ordered flatly.
The two officers stepped past Grant, walking directly toward the stage steps where Ava Carlisle was trying to shrink back behind a tall floral arrangement.
"Wait! Get away from me!" Ava shrieked, her high-pitched voice shattering her sophisticated image as the officers grabbed her by both elbows. "Grant! Do something! Tell them who I am!"
"Let her go!" Grant shouted, lunging forward to intervene.
Marcus Vance stepped smoothly into Grant’s path, placing one heavy, gloved palm against Grant’s chest. The force stopped the billionaire in his tracks, pushing him back two full steps.
"Touch an officer, Mr. Mercer," Marcus whispered, "and you will spend the night in Cook County Central Booking on felony assault charges before your lawyers even know which courthouse you're in."
"Grant!" Ava screamed as the officers turned her around, hauling her down the carpeted aisle toward the grand entrance.
Her expensive champagne silk dress caught on the edge of a mahogany table, tearing open along the side seam to reveal her thigh. One of her high-heeled shoes slipped off, clattering uselessly across the marble floor.
"Grant! Help me!" she wailed, tears smearing her heavy eyeliner across her cheeks as the press pool rushed forward, shutter buttons clicking continuously.
"Put those cameras down!" Grant roared, chasing after them toward the lobby. "I will sue every single one of your networks! I will buy your papers and fire every reporter in the building!"
"You won't be buying anything tomorrow, Mr. Mercer," a calm, dignified voice echoed from the main entrance foyer.

The crowd parted.
Stepping through the glass sliding doors, flanked by two senior legal associates holding thick leather briefs, was Nolan Brooks.
