Chapter 6 - The Hawthorne Clause

Grant stopped five feet from the legendary attorney. He recognized Nolan Brooks instantly—every major developer in the Midwest knew the man who held the keys to the oldest private land trusts in the country.
"Brooks," Grant breathed, his chest heaving under his tuxedo. "What is the meaning of this circus? Have you lost your mind? Emma is in labor! I have a right to be upstairs with my wife!"
Nolan Brooks adjusted his gold-rimmed reading glasses, looking down at Grant with a clinical, detached expression that held less emotion than a winter frost.
"You had nine opportunities to be upstairs with your wife, Mr. Mercer," Nolan said, pulling a folded legal document from his breast pocket. "You chose champagne. You chose public relations. And you chose the company of the woman currently being escorted into the back of a private security transport vehicle outside."
Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass doors, Ava was being forced into the rear seat of a black suburban by two Hawthorne security officers, while thirty photographers snapped pictures of her torn dress, bare foot, and crying face.
"She’s my employee!" Grant spat, desperate to save face before the gathering crowd of donors. "She was managing my press strategy for the event!"
"She was wearing your wife’s diamonds," Nolan countered instantly, his voice quiet, lethal, and perfectly clear. "Diamonds that were purchased using funds drawn from the Hawthorne-Mercer Joint Development Account—an account that was established under the strict legal condition that it be utilized exclusively for domestic infrastructure and family asset management."
Grant went rigid. "That account was mixed capital!"
"It was ninety-two percent Hawthorne capital," Nolan corrected smoothly. "When you married Emma six years ago, you signed the Hawthorne-Mercer Marital Property Agreement. You believed it was a standard prenuptial contract designed to protect your real estate holdings."
Grant’s jaw tightened. "It was a prenuptial agreement. My lawyers drafted it!"
"Your lawyers drafted the primary clauses," Nolan said, a faint, terrifying smile flickering across his old lips. "But my office added Section 22—the Hawthorne Clause."
Nolan opened the paper in his hand, reading aloud for the benefit of the surrounding reporters, who were hanging on every single word.
"'In the event that the designated spouse displays egregious moral breach, intentional medical abandonment, or open public infidelity during a period of critical medical necessity involving the primary heir... all corporate voting proxies, shared land leases, and joint development rights granted to said spouse under the Mercer Global partnership shall instantly revert to the Hawthorne Master Trust.'"
Grant felt the blood drain entirely from his head. His vision swam.
"That... that clause isn't legal," Grant whispered, his voice failing him. "No court in Illinois would enforce an ethical forfeiture clause on commercial assets!"
"The Chancery Court enforced it thirty minutes ago, Grant," Nolan said, leaning in slightly closer so only Grant could hear his next words. "Judge Harrison signed the temporary restraining order and asset freeze at 2:15 AM. As of right now, every commercial building you own that sits on Hawthorne land—including the North Pier site, the Meridian Tower, and your corporate headquarters on Michigan Avenue—is under receivership."
Grant took a staggering step back, reaching out to steady himself against a decorative marble pillar.
"You... you stripped my operational access?"
"No," Nolan said coldly, stepping past him toward the private medical elevators. "Emma did. With a single phone call from her hospital bed while you were telling these people that 'tonight is about family.'"
Nolan pressed his biometric thumb against the elevator scanner. The doors slid open instantly with a soft, authoritative chime.
"Where are you going?" Grant demanded, trying to follow him.

Marcus Vance stepped in front of Grant once again, his heavy arm blocking the elevator entrance.
"Mr. Brooks is going upstairs to welcome Emma’s daughter into the world," Marcus said. "You, Mr. Mercer, are going to leave this building before I have you arrested for criminal trespass on Hawthorne property."
