Chapter 7 - The Birth of Victoria

On the fourth floor, behind the double swinging doors of Surgical Suite 3, the harsh, metallic sound of medical monitors was suddenly cut by a sharp, clear, ringing sound.

A baby’s cry.

Dr. Rachel Monroe lifted the tiny, slick, pink child into the warm air of the operating room, her face breaking into an exhausted, triumphant smile.

"Time of birth: 3:12 AM," Dr. Monroe announced loudly. "It’s a girl, Emma. She is healthy. Strong lungs."

Emma lay on the operating table, her face pale, her hair soaked with perspiration, but her eyes were bright, clear, and filled with an overwhelming, luminous strength.

"Let me... let me see her," Emma whispered.

The pediatric nurse carefully wrapped the baby in a warm flannel blanket and laid her gently against Emma’s chest.

Emma looked down at her daughter. The baby had a tuft of soft, dark hair, tiny fingers that immediately curled around Emma’s thumb, and bright, dark eyes that seemed to look straight into her mother’s soul.

"Victoria," Emma murmured, her voice thick with emotion, pressing a gentle kiss against the baby’s forehead. "Your name is Victoria Hawthorne."

Not Mercer. Never Mercer.

The heavy doors of the recovery ante-room opened ten minutes later as Emma was wheeled out on a comfortable mobile bed, holding Victoria tightly in her arms.

Standing near the window, holding his hat in his hands, was Nolan Brooks.

As Emma was moved into her private suite, Nolan stepped forward, bowing his head respectfully.

"She is magnificent, Emma," Nolan said quietly, looking at the sleeping infant.

"Is it done, Nolan?" Emma asked, her voice steady despite her physical exhaustion.

"Every instruction you gave me has been executed to the letter," Nolan replied, pulling a chair up beside her bed. "The gala below has been completely shut down. Ava Carlisle was escorted from the premises by private security in full view of the press corps."

Emma closed her eyes for a moment, taking a deep, slow breath. "And Grant?"

"He was served with the temporary emergency restraining order in the lobby ten minutes ago," Nolan said. "His corporate accounts associated with the Hawthorne land leases have been frozen. His board of directors has already called an emergency teleconference for six o'clock this morning."

Emma looked down at her daughter’s tiny face.

"He thought I was helpless, Nolan," she whispered. "He thought because I stayed home for three years and let him build his public image, I had forgotten who I was."

"Men who build towers out of other people's land always forget that the ground can move beneath them," Nolan said gently. "Your grandfather built this city’s medical infrastructure so that no one in this family would ever be at the mercy of an outsider."

A gentle knock sounded at the suite door.

Nurse Linda Parrish stepped inside, carrying a large tray of fresh broth, tea, and warm towels. She looked at Emma, then at Nolan, a bright, triumphant grin on her face.

"The press is lined up around the block outside the main entrance, Mrs. Hawthorne," Linda said, intentionally dropping the 'Mercer'. "Grant Mercer is currently sitting in his limousine at the curb, refusing to leave until he gets a statement."

Emma looked at Nolan. "Give him a statement."

Nolan pulled a fountain pen from his pocket. "What would you like it to say?"

May you like

Emma stroked her daughter’s soft cheek with her index finger.

"Tell him," Emma said calmly, "that the primary heir of the Hawthorne Estate has arrived. And she does not grant visiting hours to strangers."
