Chapter 4 - The Siege of Pine Crest

The deafening roar of automatic gunfire shattered the tranquility of the Lake Forest woods. Glass rained down onto the hardwood floors of the lodge as Dominic’s guards took defensive positions behind the heavy leather furniture and stone pillars.
Dominic moved with cold, lethal precision. He fired three controlled shots through the shattered front window, dropping an advancing attacker on the gravel driveway.
"Fall back to the secondary line!" Dominic shouted to his men over the din of screeching metal and shattering wood. "Hold the staircase! Nobody gets to the second floor!"
Out in the snow-covered driveway, three black SUVs had rammed through the estate gates. Over a dozen heavily armed men clad in dark tactical gear were pouring into the yard, led by Marco Salerno—Victor’s ruthless thirty-year-old nephew, a man known throughout the Chicago underworld for his unhinged cruelty.
"Moretti!" Marco’s voice boomed through a megaphone over the sound of gunfire. "Give us Victor and step down! The Moretti reign is over! Chicago belongs to Salerno now!"
Dominic reloaded his pistol, his jaw clenched tightly. He had only six guards inside the house; the rest of his forces were still en route from the city, thirty minutes away. They were hopelessly outnumbered.
Upstairs, in the master bedroom, Ellie locked the heavy steel reinforcement door and dragged a massive oak dresser in front of it. Elena sat up in bed, her hands clutching her chest, her face pale as snow.
"They found us," Elena whispered, her body trembling. "Marco... he’s a monster, Ellie. If he gets in here..."
"He won't," Ellie said firmly. She walked over to the bed, holding the heavy iron meat cleaver in one hand, and pulled Elena into a tight embrace. "Your brother is down there fighting for you. And I am right here. Nobody is breaking through that door."
Downstairs, the battle raged with merciless intensity. Smoke filled the living room, smelling sharply of sulfur and cordite. Dominic took a hit to his left shoulder—a grazing bullet that tore through his suit coat and drew a line of burning pain across his skin—but he barely noticed it. He dropped another Salerno soldier advancing through the kitchen door.
However, the pressure was overwhelming. Two of Dominic’s guards fell, wounded and groaning on the floor. The remaining men were forced back up the grand wooden staircase, firing down into the foyer as Marco’s men flooded into the house.
"Surrender, Moretti!" Marco taunted, stepping into the ruined foyer, holding an assault rifle. "You're fighting for a dead empire! Your uncle saw the truth! You're weak!"
"My uncle is a rat!" Dominic barked from the top of the stairs, returning fire and forcing Marco behind a stone pillar. "And you're standing in my house!"
Suddenly, a loud explosion rocked the back of the lodge.
Marco had sent a second breach team through the rear patio doors. Heavy footsteps echoed up the back service stairs—the very stairs that led directly to Elena’s bedroom.
Dominic’s heart seized in terror. "Elena!" he roared, abandoning his position at the main staircase and sprinting down the dark upper hallway toward his sister’s room.
Two Salerno gunmen rounded the corner near the master suite. Dominic fired twice, taking out the first man, but his gun clicked empty on the second. The remaining gunman raised his shotgun, aiming directly at Dominic’s chest.
Before the shooter could pull the trigger, the heavy steel door of the master bedroom flew open with tremendous force.
Ellie burst out, wielding a heavy brass floor lamp like a spear. With a fierce battle cry, she rammed the heavy base directly into the gunman's ribs.
The man gasped in agony, dropping his shotgun. Ellie didn't stop. She swung the lamp in a wide, powerful arc, striking him squarely across the helmet, knocking him cold to the floor.
Dominic stared at her, his mouth slightly open, panting for air.
Ellie lowered the lamp, wiping sweat and dust from her forehead, looking down at the unconscious soldier. "I told you," she panted, her hazel eyes meeting Dominic’s with wild, fiery intensity. "I take care of my family."
"You are incredible," Dominic breathed, rushing forward and pulling her into a fierce, breathless kiss.
It was sudden, desperate, and filled with the raw adrenaline of survival. His lips pressed against hers with possessive warmth, and Ellie leaned into it, her heart soaring amid the chaos.
When he pulled back, his eyes were burning with renewed resolve. "Stay behind me."
He picked up the fallen gunman’s shotgun, racked the slide, and turned back toward the main hallway just as the sound of heavy engines roared outside the house.
Bright spotlights flashed through the shattered windows. The sound of dozens of doors slamming shut echoed from the driveway, followed by the deafening roar of automatic weapons from a fresh army.
Dominic’s main syndicate fleet had finally arrived.
Over forty Moretti soldiers, led by Leo, flooded the grounds, crushing Marco Salerno’s force in a brutal five-minute crossfire. The siege was broken.
Ten minutes later, the house fell silent.
Dominic walked out onto the front porch, the shotgun resting over his shoulder. The snow on the driveway was painted with dark crimson, and Marco Salerno lay zip-tied on the ground, surrounded by a dozen armed Moretti men.
Leo walked up to Dominic, bowing his head slightly. "The estate is secure, boss. The Salerno crew in the city has been rounded up. It’s over."
Dominic looked at Marco, then down at his own bleeding arm. The old life—the constant war, the paranoia, the endless blood—lay scattered across the ruined driveway.
He looked back toward the open doorway of the lodge. Ellie stood there, wrapped in her flour-dusted apron, her arm around Elena’s shoulders as she helped the paralyzed girl sit in her wheelchair.
Dominic made his decision.
"Take Marco to the police," Dominic ordered Leo quietly.
Leo blinked in absolute shock. "The police? Boss... we don't call the cops. We handle this ourselves."
"We do now," Dominic said, his voice ringing with absolute, unquestioned authority. "Hand over the evidence of Victor’s treason, the recordings of Marco’s attack, and every piece of financial data connecting the Salerno family to the dock murders. Let the federal prosecutors put them away for life."
Leo stared at his boss, seeing a transformation that seemed almost miraculous. "And what about you, boss?"
May you like
Dominic unbuckled his holster, took his gun, and tossed it into the snow at Leo’s feet.
"I’m going home," Dominic said softly. "To build a life."
