Chapter 5 - A New Foundation

Six months later, the sun shone brightly over the rolling green hills of a newly built estate in Oak Brook, far away from the dark, paranoid memories of the old city mansion.

There were no high guard towers here. No hidden micro-cameras in the bedrooms. The house was built of warm cedar, broad glass windows, and sprawling stone patios surrounded by blooming rose gardens.

In the sunlit kitchen, the air smelled intoxicatingly of fresh vanilla, toasted pecans, and cinnamon.

Ellie stood behind a large marble island, wearing a bright yellow apron, expertly piping white frosting onto a four-tiered wedding cake. Her brown hair was pinned up neatly, a few soft curls framing her glowing, happy face.

"You're going to ruin your appetite before dinner," a smooth, deep voice purred behind her.

Dominic walked into the kitchen, wearing a simple navy polo shirt and tailored slacks. He looked ten years younger. The dark circles beneath his eyes were gone, replaced by a radiant, healthy energy. He walked up behind Ellie, wrapping his strong arms around her broad waist, resting his chin on her shoulder.

"I’m testing the quality," Ellie laughed, leaning back into his solid chest. "A good baker always tastes her work."

Dominic leaned over and kissed her cheek, his fingers gently rubbing her hip. "Elena is down at the stable. She rode the horse by herself today for thirty minutes."

Ellie turned in his arms, her eyes sparkling with genuine joy. "Really? That’s amazing, Dominic! Her core strength has improved so much!"

"It’s because of you," Dominic said softly, his dark eyes gazing into hers with unbounded adoration. "You gave her a life, Ellie. You gave both of us a life."

Dominic had officially stepped down from the active leadership of the Moretti organization, turning the legitimate shipping and real estate enterprises into a blind trust managed by professional executives, while dismantling the underground operations entirely. The city was at peace, and Dominic was finally free.

"And what about you, Mr. Moretti?" Ellie teasingly asked, running her fingers through his dark, thick hair. "Are you getting bored without your security monitors and your guns?"

"I have everything I need right here," Dominic whispered.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. He flipped it open, revealing a magnificent diamond ring set in rose gold, sparkling brilliant in the afternoon sunlight.

Ellie’s breath caught in her throat. She looked from the ring up to Dominic’s face, her eyes welling with sudden, happy tears.

"Ellie Whitfield," Dominic said, dropping to one knee on the hardwood floor, holding her hand softly in his. "You came into my house as a nurse. You fought off assassins with a skillet. You showed me that real power isn't about fear—it’s about love. Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?"

Ellie let out a wet, joyous laugh, wiping a tear from her cheek with her floury thumb.

"Only if you promise to let me keep baking," she wept happily.

"Darling," Dominic smiled, slipping the ring onto her finger and standing up to lift her into a soaring embrace, "you can have every pan in the house."

Outside, the warm summer wind blew through the trees as Elena rolled her wheelchair up the stone path, laughing at the sight of her brother spinning the plus-size nurse around the kitchen. The shadows of betrayal were gone, replaced by a light that would never be extinguished.
