Chapter 9 - The Kitchen at Midnight

It was two in the morning.

The estate was wrapped in a deep, peaceful silence. Outside, a gentle autumn rain tapped rhythmically against the glass windows, a comforting lullaby that drifted through the broad, warm halls of the Oak Brook mansion.

In the master suite, the high-canopied bed was comfortable and soft, but Ellie found herself awake.

She slipped out from under the heavy down comforter, stepping barefoot onto the warm wooden floor. She put on a thick plush robe, tying it loosely around her waist, and walked softly down the hallway toward the nursery.

The nightlight cast a soft amber glow over the room. Little Victor slept peacefully in his wooden crib, his tiny fists curled beside his dark hair, breathing softly. Ellie smiled, reaching down to gently tuck the small blue blanket over his shoulders.

Satisfied, she tiptoed downstairs to the kitchen.

The kitchen was her domain—a vast, beautiful space with marble countertops, copper pots hanging from exposed wooden beams, and a double industrial oven that saw daily use.

She didn't turn on the overhead lights. Instead, she clicked on the small under-cabinet LEDs, filling the room with a warm, intimate glow. Instinctively, she reached for a large ceramic bowl, pulling a bag of flour, a jar of yeast, and fresh honey from the pantry.

Baking at night was a habit she had never lost. In the old days, it was a way to survive the stress of exhaustion and poverty. Now, it was a quiet celebration of her peace.

She began measuring the flour, the soft sift-sift sound mixing with the gentle rhythm of the rain outside.

"Need an assistant?" a low, velvety voice asked from the doorway.

Ellie turned, smiling warmly.

Dominic stood leaning against the doorframe, wearing dark gray sweatpants and a loose white t-shirt. His dark hair was messy from sleep, and he looked entirely relaxed, his bare feet resting on the cool kitchen floor.

"Did I wake you?" Ellie asked softly, stirring the warm water and yeast in her bowl.

"No," Dominic said, walking over to her. He didn't stand across the island this time. He stepped directly behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her soft, broad body tight against his chest. He rested his chin in the crook of her neck, inhaling the sweet scent of vanilla and lavender that always lingered on her skin. "I woke up and the bed felt cold without you."

Ellie leaned back into his embrace, letting her head rest against his shoulder as she stirred the batter. "I was just making soft rolls for breakfast tomorrow. Elena asked for them."

Dominic turned his head, pressing a soft, lingering kiss against the delicate skin behind her ear, making Ellie shiver with delight.

"You spoil us, Eleanor," Dominic whispered, his hands moving up to gently cup her waist over her robe.

"Someone has to," she murmured, setting the spoon down and turning around in his arms. She looked up into his dark, expressive eyes—eyes that used to command empires of blood, but now looked at her with pure, unadulterated worship. "Are you happy, Dominic?"

Dominic looked into her face—her full, beautiful face that had faced down assassins without fear, her clear hazel eyes that held no secrets.

"Happy doesn't cover it," Dominic said softly, his thumbs gently tracing her cheekbones. "For twenty years, I thought my life was meant to be lived in the dark. I thought happiness was a myth invented for people who didn't carry my name. You saved my sister's life, Ellie, but you saved my soul."

Ellie reached up, running her broad, soft fingers through his hair. "You saved yourself, Dominic. You just needed someone to remind you that you were allowed to choose the light."

May you like

Dominic smiled—a genuine, brilliant smile that reached his eyes—and brought his lips down to hers.

The kiss was slow, deep, and filled with a profound, quiet passion that didn't need to rush. Outside, the rain continued to fall, washing away the last lingering memories of the old world. In the warm, golden kitchen, surrounded by the smell of fresh flour and sweet honey, the former mob boss and the plus-size nurse held each other close, knowing that their fortress was finally complete.
