Chapter 10 - THE HOUSE OF SUNSHINE

Six months later.
Spring had arrived in Dallas, turning the rolling estate grounds of the Carter mansion into a vibrant sea of green grass, blooming yellow roses, and warm sunlight.
The dark, gloomy silence that had shrouded the mansion for three years was completely gone, replaced by the beautiful, ringing sound of a child's laughter echoing across the gardens.
Running across the manicured lawn, wearing a bright yellow sundress and a matching ribbon in her dark curls, was nine-year-old Lily Carter. She was chasing a fluffy Golden Retriever puppy, her happy giggles filling the fresh morning air.
Standing on the grand stone patio overlooking the gardens, holding two mugs of hot coffee, was Ethan Carter.
He wore a casual navy sweater and jeans. The cold, hardened edge that had defined his face for three years had completely dissolved, replaced by a radiant, deeply peaceful happiness.
Stepping out onto the patio beside him, wearing a soft cream-colored silk dress, was Elena Salgado.
Ethan slid his arm around her waist, pulling her flush against his side, pressing a tender kiss against her temple.
"How is your grandmother settling into the guest villa?" Ethan asked softly, looking down at her with boundless love.
"She loves it," Elena smiled, leaning her head against his shoulder. "She spent two hours this morning telling the head gardener that he was pruning the rosebushes wrong. He actually listened to her."
Ethan laughed—a rich, warm sound that warmed Elena's heart.
"Carmen runs this estate now," Ethan joked fondly. "I just pay the property taxes."
Elena looked out at Lily playing with the puppy in the sun.
Over the past six months, with top pediatric specialists, proper nutrition, and boundless love, Lily had made a full physical and emotional recovery. She was thriving in her new private school, loved art classes, and called Elena "Mommy Elena" every night before bed.
Through Ethan's immense philanthropic funding, the Elena Salgado Pediatric Medical Ethics Foundation had been established—a hundred-million-dollar charity dedicated to protecting vulnerable children, funding rare blood disorder research, and providing full nursing scholarships to underprivileged students across Texas.
Elena had officially received her honorary Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from the state board, her record fully cleared and celebrated across the medical community.
"What are you thinking about, my love?" Ethan murmured, his large hand gently stroking her waist.
"I was thinking about the day I walked into your library," Elena admitted, turning to face him, wrapping her arms around his neck. "I was terrified. You looked so cold, so powerful, so broken."
Ethan looked down into her hazel eyes—the eyes that had seen his pain when everyone else saw only his wealth.
"I was dead inside, Elena," Ethan confessed softly, taking her hand and placing it over his heart, where a steady, strong pulse beat against her palm. "You didn't just save my daughter. You saved me. You brought light back into a house that had been dark for three years."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.
He opened it to reveal a magnificent, ethically sourced yellow diamond ring that sparkled like sunlight in the morning air.
Ethan dropped to one knee on the stone patio, holding her hand, his grey eyes shining with pure, eternal devotion.
"Elena Salgado," Ethan said, his voice thick with emotion. "You came into my life as my twelfth housekeeper. You became my partner, my strength, and the savior of my family. Will you marry me and make this house a home forever?"
Elena's eyes filled with tears of pure, unadulterated joy.
"Yes, Ethan!" Elena cried out, throwing her arms around his neck as he stood up, lifting her off her feet and kissing her deeply under the warm Texas sky.
"DADDY! ELENA!" Lily shouted, running up the patio steps with the puppy tumbling behind her, jumping into their embrace.

Ethan pulled both of them into his arms, holding his daughter and his future wife close against his heart.
The storm was over. The buried room was open. And inside the house of sunshine, love had finally won.
