Chapter 7 - THE SUB-BASEMENT BREACH

The fog swallowed their shadows as Ethan, Elena, and Marcus sprinted across the grassy perimeter, clearing the security fence through a cut section of wire.
Click.
The secondary power grid flickered and died for ninety seconds, plunging the rear loading dock of Vanguard Facility 4 into pitch darkness.
Marcus used a hydraulic lock-cracker to pop the heavy steel service door.
They slipped inside silently, stepping into a cold, sterile corridor painted in hospital white, smelling strongly of bleach, formaldehyde, and industrial cold air.
They navigated the hallway quickly, reaching the heavy steel elevator doors marked AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY — LEVEL B3.
Beside the elevator sat a glowing blue biometric palm scanner.
Ethan stepped forward, pulled the synthetic latex sleeve over his right hand, and pressed his palm flat against the glass scanner.
A green laser line swept over his palm.
SYNTHETIC PATTERN MATCHED. WELCOME, DR. VANCE.
Ding.
The heavy elevator doors slid open smoothly.
They stepped inside. Marcus pressed the button for Sub-Basement 3.
As the elevator descended deep into the earth, the temperature inside the car plummeted. Elena shivered slightly, but Ethan wrapped a warm, steady arm around her shoulder, pulling her close against his side.
"You okay?" Ethan whispered.
"I'm ready," Elena replied, her eyes firm and unwavering.
Ding.
The elevator doors opened onto Sub-Basement 3.
The scene before them was chilling.
A long, circular glass corridor opened up before them, looking into high-tech medical research labs filled with centrifuges, blood filtration columns, and automated monitoring banks.
Walking down the corridor toward them was a male lab technician wearing a white hazmat suit and holding a digital clipboard.
He stopped, his eyes widening in shock as he saw Ethan in black tactical gear and Marcus holding a silenced weapon.
"Hey! What are you—" the technician started to shout.
Marcus lunged forward with blinding speed, wrapping his arm around the technician's neck in a sleeper hold. The technician gasped once and went limp, falling safely into Marcus's arms.
Marcus dragged the unconscious technician into a side supply closet, stripping him of his keycard.
Elena ran over to the central medical monitoring terminal built into the hallway wall.
Her fingers flew across the glass touchscreen, pulling up the patient directory for Sub-Basement 3.
"Room B-302," Elena read, her voice trembling with intense emotion. "Active patient monitoring... Subject Alpha... Age 9... Phenotype Bombay Null Negative!"
Ethan stared at the screen.
Age 9.
Lily was six when she was taken. Three years had passed. She was nine now.
"She's here," Ethan whispered, tears welling in his dark eyes. "She's right through those doors!"
They ran down the circular corridor, stopping before a massive, reinforced glass cleanroom door labeled CONTAINMENT SUITE B-302.
Inside, illuminated by soft blue nightlights, sat a white hospital bed surrounded by monitoring equipment.
Lying in the bed, wrapped in a soft blanket, was a little girl with dark curly hair.
She was sleeping quietly, an IV line attached to her delicate arm, leading to a blood filtration unit beside her bed.

Ethan pressed his hands against the heavy glass window, his chest heaving with overwhelming, beautiful, agonizing joy.
"Lily..." Ethan choked out, his voice breaking entirely. "My baby girl..."
