Chapter 4 - THE STEPBROTHER’S WEBNET

Elena leaned over the desk, looking at the transaction details displayed on the screen.
"Arthur Vance?" Elena read the name aloud. "Your stepbrother?"
"Arthur was my father's stepson," Ethan explained, his voice trembling with a mixture of grief and lethal fury. "When my father died ten years ago, he left seventy percent of Carter Global Enterprises to me and thirty percent to Arthur. Arthur was furious. He always felt cheated, claiming he deserved half the empire."
"Why would he take Lily instead of just killing her?" Elena asked, her medical mind analyzing the psychological motive.
Ethan opened another folder on his terminal, bringing up Arthur Vance's corporate registry for Vanguard Biometrics.
"Because Vanguard Biometrics specializes in rare pediatric genetic research," Ethan said, his eyes widening in sudden, horrific comprehension. "My daughter, Lily... she possessed an extremely rare blood phenotype—Bombay Null negative. Less than zero point zero zero one percent of the world population has it."
Elena gasped, her hands flying to her mouth.
"A universal donor phenotype for rare blood factor therapies," Elena said, her nursing training instantly recognizing the horrific value. "It's worth tens of millions of dollars on the black-market medical exchange!"
"Arthur didn't just kidnap my daughter," Ethan realized, his baritone voice dropping into a dark, terrifying tone. "He staged the car crash to kill my wife, falsified Lily's death, and stole my child to use her as a living blood source for his illegal pharmaceutical experiments!"
Ethan stood up from the desk, his presence so imposing and dangerous that the very air in the vault seemed to grow heavy.
"For three years," Ethan whispered, looking at the photograph of his smiling daughter, "my little girl has been trapped in one of Arthur's private research facilities, while I sat in this empty house believing she was in the ground."
He turned to look at Elena, his dark eyes burning with fierce, absolute resolve.
"Elena, I need you," Ethan said firmly. "I have the money, the security forces, and the intelligence network. But I don't know medical facility protocols. I don't know how to navigate a high-containment medical laboratory without triggering alarms that could put Lily in danger."
Elena looked at the drawing on the nursery wall—MY HERO DADDY.
She thought of her grandmother Carmen's words: Rich people distrust anyone who looks kind before they understand the price of kindness.
She wasn't standing before a heartless billionaire anymore. She was standing before a desperate father ready to tear the world apart to save his daughter.
"I know medical containment protocols, Mr. Carter," Elena said clearly, her hazel eyes locking onto his. "I know how blood storage facilities operate, how patient shifts are rotated, and how emergency medical transport works."
She held out her hand to him.
"Let's go get your daughter back."
Ethan grabbed her hand, squeezing it with profound gratitude.
Suddenly, the security terminal chimed with a sharp red warning light.
ALERT: EXTERNAL NETWORK PROBE DETECTED.
Ethan turned back to the screen instantly.
"Arthur's network security just realized I accessed Dr. Harrison's offshore financial logs," Ethan said, typing rapidly to sever the connection. "They know someone is looking into the October 17 records!"
The security camera feed from the mansion's front gate flashed onto the monitor.
Two black luxury sedans with tinted windows pulled up outside the wrought-iron gates of the Carter Estate.
