Chapter 1 - THE ANNOUNCEMENT

Three hundred people had gathered beneath the crystal chandeliers of the Harrington Estate to witness what everyone believed would be the announcement of the year.

A wedding.

A pregnancy.

And, if the gossip magazines were right, the beginning of a perfect billionaire dynasty.

Ethan Harrington stood at the center of the marble ballroom, expression unreadable.

At thirty-four, he was one of America's youngest billionaires, the heir to Harrington Global, a company that owned hotels, private aviation companies, luxury resorts, and enough real estate to make entire neighborhoods disappear from the map.

Tonight, however, none of that mattered.

Because the woman beside him had just placed one trembling hand over her stomach.

Victoria Sinclair smiled for the crowd.

"I'm pregnant."

Applause exploded through the ballroom.

People stood.

Champagne glasses lifted.

Someone shouted congratulations.

Victoria's eyes filled with carefully measured tears.

Ethan didn't move.

He simply stared at her.

For one second, something flickered across his face.

Surprise.

Then suspicion.

Victoria reached for his hand.

"Ethan?"

He looked at her.

She whispered through her smile.

"Say something."

Ethan forced a smile.

"Congratulations."

The cameras loved it.

The guests loved it even more.

Within minutes, phones were everywhere.

Photographs were being taken.

Messages were flying across social media.

BILLIONAIRE ETHAN HARRINGTON TO BECOME A FATHER.

VICTORIA SINCLAIR ANNOUNCES PREGNANCY AT PRIVATE FAMILY GALA.

AMERICA'S GOLDEN COUPLE EXPECTING THEIR FIRST CHILD.

But near the back of the ballroom, a three-year-old girl wasn't clapping.

She was staring.

Her name was Lily.

She was the daughter of one of the estate's longtime employees.

She stood beside her mother, a housekeeper named Nora, holding a small stuffed rabbit against her chest.

Lily didn't understand billionaires.

She didn't understand headlines.

She didn't understand why three hundred adults were cheering.

But she understood something was wrong.

Because she'd been watching Victoria all evening.

And now Lily pointed at her.

"Mommy."

Nora bent down.

"What is it, sweetheart?"

The little girl whispered something.

Nora's smile disappeared.

"What?"

Lily pointed again.

"Under her dress."

Nora looked toward Victoria.

"Don't point, Lily."

"But Mommy..."

"Come here."

Nora tried to pull her daughter away.

Too late.

Lily slipped free.

She ran across the marble floor.

Several guests laughed.

Someone assumed she was simply an excited child.

Victoria watched her approach.

Then Lily stopped directly in front of her.

She looked up.

"That's not a baby."

The ballroom went silent.

Victoria's smile vanished.

Ethan stared at the child.

"What did you say?"

Lily pointed toward Victoria's stomach.

"That's not where the baby is."

A nervous laugh came from somewhere in the crowd.

Victoria's face turned pale.

She bent slightly.

"Sweetheart, why don't you go back to your mommy?"

Lily shook her head.

"No."

Then she said the words that changed everything.

"I saw what's under your dress."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Nora rushed forward.

"Lily!"

But Lily had already reached toward Victoria's skirt.

Victoria stepped backward.

"Don't touch me!"

The sudden sharpness in her voice startled everyone.

Lily froze.

Ethan's expression changed.

He looked at Victoria.

Then at the child.

"What did she see?"

Victoria swallowed.

"She's three."

"So?"

"She doesn't understand."

Lily's eyes filled with confusion.

"I do understand."

Everyone looked at her.

The little girl hugged her rabbit.

"She has a pillow."

Someone gasped.

Victoria's hand immediately went to her stomach.

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

"A pillow?"

Victoria laughed nervously.

"Children say strange things."

But Lily wasn't finished.

She pointed toward Victoria's waist.

"She put it there."

The ballroom erupted in whispers.

Victoria looked at Ethan.

"Ethan, please."

He didn't answer.

He stepped toward her.

"Is she telling the truth?"

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

"You believe a three-year-old over me?"

"I asked you a question."

"I am pregnant."

"Then what's beneath the dress?"

Victoria said nothing.

The silence became unbearable.

Ethan reached toward her.

Victoria grabbed his wrist.

"Don't."

He stared at her hand.

Then at her face.

For the first time that evening, the perfect billionaire couple looked nothing like the photographs.

Ethan gently pulled his hand away.

"Take her upstairs."

Victoria's voice cracked.

"You wouldn't."

"I didn't say what I was going to do."

He turned toward his head of security.

"Get a doctor."

Victoria shook her head.

"No."

The word came too quickly.

Ethan noticed.

So did everyone else.

Then Lily tugged on Ethan's jacket.

He looked down.

The child whispered:

"Mr. Ethan?"

"Yes?"

"I saw something else."

His face tightened.

"What?"

Lily looked toward the staircase.

"There's blood."

Nora covered her mouth.

Victoria went completely still.

Ethan slowly turned toward his fiancée.

"What blood?"

Victoria didn't answer.

Then, from the balcony above them, a man's voice broke through the silence.

"Because the child is telling the truth."

Everyone looked up.

An elderly man stood in the shadows.

Ethan recognized him instantly.

His grandfather's former attorney.

A man who had supposedly died five years ago.

Arthur Vance.

Ethan's blood ran cold.

The old man smiled.

May you like

"That isn't the only secret Victoria has been hiding."

And then the heavy oak ballroom doors slammed shut.
