Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Harts

The moment the words "United States Attorney's Office" left Nathan’s mouth, the illusion of high-society decorum shattered completely.
Gasps flared up across the ballroom. Several prominent socialites who had been sipping champagne with Evelyn minutes earlier stepped backward, physically distancing themselves from her as if she carried a contagious disease. Two board members of Hart Enterprises who were present in the crowd immediately pulled out their phones, frantically attempting to dial their legal counsels before remembering the estate gates were locked.
Martin Shaw made a sudden, desperate movement toward the terrace doors, attempting to shove past the security guard blocking his exit.
"Don't do that, Martin," Daniel, the head of security, said calmly, placing a massive, gloved hand squarely on the older man's shoulder. The pressure was gentle, but Martin’s momentum stopped instantly. He sagged into the guard's grip, looking utterly defeated.
Evelyn stood in the center of the ballroom floor, surrounded by three hundred people who were now staring at her not with admiration or envy, but with cold disgust and morbid curiosity. The ivory gown, once the symbol of her ultimate triumph, now looked like a absurd, stained costume.
"You ruined me," Evelyn whispered, her voice raspy and trembling with a terrifying blend of rage and sorrow. She glared at Nathan, her head tilted at an unhinged angle. "You did this on purpose! You brought me here, you let me host this party, just to destroy me in front of everyone!"
"You destroyed yourself, Evelyn," Nathan replied, his voice remaining totally level. "I gave you three opportunities over the last six months to come clean about the financial discrepancies my auditors found. Every single time, you lied to my face. You blamed lower-level accountants. You blamed banking glitches. You used our relationship as a weapon to stall investigation."
Nathan stepped closer to her, his shadow falling over her small frame.
"Tonight, I was prepared to address this privately in my study after the guests left," Nathan said softly, so that only Evelyn and Claire, standing nearby, could hear. "I was going to offer your family a quiet restructuring deal to keep your employees from losing their pensions, provided you stepped down from the board and sought help."
Evelyn blinked, her mouth opening slightly. "You... you were?"
"Yes," Nathan said. "Until I watched you grab an innocent woman by the ankle and drag her across a marble floor like an animal. Until I heard you explain that she didn't matter because she was 'staff'."
He looked her dead in the eye.
"That was the moment I realized you aren't just desperate, Evelyn. You are fundamentally rotten. And I will not protect a monster."
Evelyn’s face twitched. The last vestige of her pride snapped. She raised her right hand, her sharp, diamond-encrusted nails aiming directly for Nathan’s face in a vicious clawing motion.
"You bastard!" she screamed.
Before her hand could reach him, Daniel stepped forward seamlessly, intercepting her wrist in mid-air with a practiced, immovable grip.
"That's enough, Miss Hart," Daniel said firmly.
"Get your filthy hands off me!" Evelyn shrieked, thrashing against the security chief’s grip. Her heels slipped on the polished floor, the ivory dress tearing slightly at the shoulder seam as she struggled. "Do you know who I am? I am Evelyn Hart! I run this town!"
Nobody answered her. The guests watched in stony silence as two female security officers stepped forward to assist Daniel. Within seconds, Evelyn was firmly restrained, her wrists held behind her back.
"Take Miss Hart and Mr. Shaw to the secondary holding office near the gatehouse," Nathan instructed Daniel. "Federal agents are already en route to the property."
"Understood, Mr. Cole," Daniel replied.
As the security team began escorting a weeping, screaming Evelyn toward the side exit, she passed within inches of Claire. Evelyn stopped thrashing for a split second, her bloodshot eyes locking onto the young temp worker.

"This is your fault," Evelyn hissed through her teeth, her voice dripping with pure hatred. "You little nobody... you ruined everything!"
Claire didn't flinch. She stood her ground, her chin raised slightly, her hand still holding her bruised shoulder. She didn't say a word. She didn't need to. The fallen heiress was being hauled away in handcuffs, while the "nobody" remained standing in the light.
