Chapter 9 - The Fallout

By seven o'clock the following morning, the events at the Cole Meridian estate had exploded across national news networks, financial tabloids, and social media platforms.

A guest’s secret phone recording of the ballroom incident—showing Evelyn Hart dragging Claire across the floor, followed immediately by Nathan Cole stepping in to defend her—had gone viral overnight, amassing over forty million views across various platforms. The internet was merciless. Evelyn Hart was instantly dubbed the "Ballroom Bully," her luxury brand deals dissolving into thin air within hours as major design houses publicly severed all ties with her family.

At nine in the morning, major news outlets confirmed that federal agents from the SEC and the FBI had executed search warrants on the headquarters of Hart Enterprises and the private residence of Martin Shaw. Headlines across the country read:

HART ENTERPRISE MERGER COLLAPSES AMID MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR FRAUD EXPOSÉ BILLIONAIRE NATHAN COLE DISSOLVES ENGAGEMENT AT STUNNING PUBLIC PARTY SOCIETY HEIRESS ARRESTED FOLLOWING ASSAULT AND SECURITIES FRAUD INVESTIGATION

Sitting in the small, sunlit kitchen of her modest two-bedroom apartment, Claire watched the news broadcast on a small television set while sipping hot tea. Her left ankle was wrapped tightly in the elastic bandage Dr. Evans had provided, and an ice pack rested gently against her bruised shoulder.

Sitting on the table beside her tea mug was the cashier's check for one hundred thousand dollars, deposited into her bank account early that morning by Nathan’s legal team, along with a formal agreement outlining her official departure from the temp agency.

Her mother, a frail but warm-eyed woman named Sarah, walked into the kitchen, looking from the television screen to the financial document sitting on the table.

"I still can't believe it, Claire," Sarah whispered, her eyes shining with unshed tears as she gently squeezed her daughter's uninjured shoulder. "After everything we've struggled through... all those hospital bills... it's really gone?"

"It's really gone, Mom," Claire said softly, a genuine smile spreading across her face for the first time in months. "The hospital accounts are paid in full. We're completely clean."

Before Sarah could respond, Claire’s smartphone buzzed on the counter. The caller ID displayed an unknown executive number with a local area code.

Claire answered the call. "Hello?"

"Good morning, Miss Bennett," a sharp, efficient female voice answered. "My name is Victoria Vance, Chief of Staff for Cole Meridian Holdings. I am calling on behalf of Mr. Nathan Cole."

Claire straightened her posture instinctively. "Good morning, Miss Vance."

"Mr. Cole instructed me to check on your recovery this morning," Victoria said smoothly. "He wanted to ensure you received the medical follow-up package sent to your residence, and to ask if you have reached a decision regarding the executive assistant position at our corporate headquarters."

Claire looked around her small, modest kitchen. She thought about the endless months of backbreaking temp labor, the humiliation she had endured on the marble floor of the estate, and the unbelievable strength and fairness Nathan Cole had shown when he stood up to protect her.

She didn't need any more time to think.

"I'm accepting the offer, Miss Vance," Claire said clearly and confidently.

"Wonderful," Victoria replied, a hint of warm approval leaking into her professional tone. "A private executive car will be dispatched to your home on Monday morning at eight sharp to bring you to the corporate tower for your orientation. Welcome to Cole Meridian, Claire."
