Chapter 8 - The Offer

Claire looked at Nathan, her eyebrows pulling together in confusion. "An offer?"
Nathan reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out a sleek silver pen, and pulled a small leather-bound notebook from the side table. He wrote a quick series of numbers on a fresh page, tore the sheet out, and handed it across the small coffee table to Claire.
Claire picked up the paper. Written on it was a figure that made her breath stop completely.
$100,000.00
"What... what is this?" Claire stammered, her hands shaking as she held the slip of paper.
"That is a settlement draft," Nathan explained calmly. "It covers your medical expenses, pain and suffering, and loss of income for the next several months. It also acts as an immediate severance from the catering agency, so you never have to work another event for Mr. Henderson again."
"Mr. Cole, I can't accept this," Claire said, trying to hand the paper back to him. "This is... this is too much money. I was only dragged a few feet, I'm not permanently injured—"
"Miss Bennett," Nathan interrupted gently, refusing to take the paper back. "Evelyn Hart's actions tonight were a direct result of corporate espionage and fraud taking place on my property. My legal team will be filing formal civil charges against her tomorrow morning. Part of that settlement will be paid out of her seized personal assets. This money is legally and morally yours."
Claire stared at the six-figure sum written on the paper. One hundred thousand dollars. It was more money than her family had seen in five years. It would pay off her mother's medical debt entirely, clear their late rent payments, and leave enough left over for Claire to finally return to college and finish her degree in business management.
Tears welled up in her dark eyes, hot and unstoppable this time. She wiped them away quickly with the back of her sleeve, feeling an overwhelming wave of relief crashing over her shoulders.
"Why are you doing this for me?" Claire asked, her voice cracking. "You don't know me. I'm just a temporary server."
"Because you showed more dignity lying on that marble floor than the people wearing diamonds in this house showed all evening," Nathan said quietly. "And because I value integrity above almost everything else."
He leaned back in his leather armchair, studying her thoughtfully.
"Which brings me to my second proposition," Nathan continued.
Claire looked up, blinking away her tears. "Second proposition?"
"My company, Cole Meridian Holdings, is currently undergoing a massive internal restructuring following the cancellation of the Hart merger," Nathan said, his tone turning crisp and professional. "My executive team needs individuals who are observant, steady under extreme pressure, and entirely untainted by high-society corporate politics."
He paused, resting his hands on the arms of his chair.
"I am offering you a full-time position as an executive administrative assistant at my corporate headquarters starting next month. The starting salary is ninety-five thousand dollars a year, with full health benefits and complete tuition coverage if you decide to finish your education."
Claire felt as though the room were spinning. In the span of less than two hours, she had gone from being dragged across a floor as an invisible servant to being offered a life-changing financial settlement and a career path at one of the most powerful financial firms in the country.
"I... I don't know what to say, Mr. Cole," Claire stammered, utterly speechlessly. "I don't have a finished degree yet. I was working temp jobs to pay my mom's hospital bills..."
"I don't hire degrees, Miss Bennett," Nathan said firmly. "I hire character. Tonight, under horrific circumstances, you displayed composure, courage, and truthfulness. I can teach anyone how to manage corporate ledgers. I cannot teach someone how to have a backbone."
He stood up, extending his hand down to her once again.
"Take the night to think about it," Nathan said gently. "My driver is waiting outside in a private town car to take you home safely. My personal assistant will call you tomorrow afternoon to follow up."
Claire looked at his extended hand, then stood up slowly, stepping forward despite the dull ache in her ankle. She took his hand, shaking it with a firm, steady grip.

"Thank you, Mr. Cole," Claire said, her voice filled with a deep, unwavering sincerity. "For everything."
"Get some rest, Claire," Nathan replied with a warm, genuine smile. "Your new life starts tomorrow."
