Chapter 6 - The Gathering Storm

That evening, the Castellano estate operated with terrifying, military efficiency.

Mara sat in her comfortable second-floor bedroom, hugging her knees to her chest while Barnaby lay across her feet. She couldn't rest. She couldn't sleep. From her window, she watched a fleet of black SUVs assemble in the inner courtyard.

Dozens of armed men in tactical black gear were moving quietly, loading equipment into the trunks of the vehicles. Among them were Leo and Thomas, two of Dominic’s most senior lieutenants, looking sharp, focused, and deadly.

At 9:00 p.m., the door to Mara’s room opened without a knock.

Evelyn Price stood in the frame. But for the first time since Mara had arrived at the estate, Evelyn didn't look cold or arrogant. She looked deeply shaken, her sharp face pale beneath the hallway lights.

“Ms. O’Leary,” Evelyn said, her voice lacking its usual bite. “Mr. Castellano requests your presence in the grand salon before he departs.”

Mara scrambled off the bed, her heart hammering against her ribs. “Where is he going, Evelyn? What is he doing?”

Evelyn looked at her for a long, silent second. “He is going to resolve your debt, Mara.”

Mara rushed past Evelyn, hurrying down the wide marble staircase into the grand salon.

Dominic stood near the floor-to-ceiling glass doors, putting on a heavy charcoal coat over a black tactical turtleneck. A shoulder holster housing a custom black sidearm sat securely across his broad chest. He looked like an army unto himself—a terrifying force of nature prepared to go to war.

He turned as Mara entered the room.

“Dominic, stop!” Mara cried out, stepping into the salon. “You can’t do this! You can’t go slaughtering people over my debt! It isn't worth it!”

Dominic walked toward her, his heavy leather boots making no sound on the thick oriental rug. He stopped inches from her, taking in her wide, frightened eyes, her disheveled hair, and the sheer terror she held for his safety.

“You think I am doing this just for a debt, Mara?” Dominic asked softly.

“Then why are you doing it?!” she demanded, tears filling her eyes. “Why risk your men, your business, your life... for a housekeeper?!”

Dominic reached out, taking both of her warm hands into his broad, calloused palms. He squeezed them tightly.

“Nine years ago, my brother Julian was murdered by men who thought they could take what was mine,” Dominic said, his voice dropping into a deep, emotional register that sent shivers down her spine. “For nine years, I lived in a cemetery. I built walls around my heart. I stopped feeling. I stopped caring. I turned myself into a machine because it was easier than feeling the pain of living.”

He stepped closer, his dark eyes searching every inch of her face.

“Then six weeks ago, a plus-size housekeeper came crashing through my office doors, fell into my chair, put my glasses on her nose, and made me laugh for the first time in nearly a decade,” Dominic whispered, his voice trembling slightly with suppressed emotion. “You brought life back into this house, Mara. You brought warmth back into my cold chest. You gave me a reason to wake up in the morning that wasn't revenge.”

Mara’s breath hitched in her throat. Tears spilled over her lashes, running down her warm cheeks.

“Dominic...” she whispered.

“Vance Vance threatened you,” Dominic continued, his thumb gently wiping her tears away. “He threatened the woman who saved my soul. In my world, that is a sentence that can only be written in blood.”

“I don't want anyone to die because of me,” Mara begged, her hands gripping his jacket lapels tightly.

Dominic looked down at her lips, then back up into her eyes.

“I promise you, Mara,” Dominic said solemnly. “There will be no mess. There will be no chaos. By midnight, Vance Vance will no longer exist in this city, and your family will be free forever.”

Before she could speak another word, Dominic leaned down and pressed his lips firmly against hers.

The kiss was deep, possessive, and filled with a fierce, burning passion that made Mara’s head spin. Her hands instinctively wrapped around his broad neck, pulling him closer as she kissed him back with all the pent-up longing, gratitude, and love that had been building inside her heart.

When he finally pulled back, both of them were breathing heavily. Dominic rested his forehead against hers for a fleeting second.

“Wait for me in my study,” Dominic murmured softly. “I will be back before midnight.”

He turned on his heel and walked out of the grand salon, his heavy coat sweeping behind him as the double doors clicked shut.
