Chapter 9 - The Sweetest Grand Opening

Six months later.

The morning sun broke brightly over Chicago’s East District, painting the newly renovated storefront of the O’Leary Family Bakery in warm, golden light.

The street was bustling with life. A long line of happy customers stretched down the block, eagerly waiting for the doors to open. The grand window displayed a gorgeous gold-lettered crest: O’Leary Family Bakery — Established 1981.

Inside, the aroma of toasted cardamom, warm butter, fresh sourdough, and rich Ethiopian coffee filled every corner of the bright, airy space.

Sean O’Leary, wearing a clean white baker’s apron, was sliding fresh trays of pastries out of brand-new, top-of-the-line deck ovens. Near the front register, Mara’s mother, healthy and radiant, was chatting happily with old neighborhood friends who had returned to celebrate the family’s triumphant rebirth.

Mara stood behind the main counter, wearing her custom navy apron, her dark curls pinned up neatly, her face flushed with pure, unadulterated joy.

The front door chimed as it opened.

The entire crowd in the bakery went quiet for a brief second as a fleet of three sleek black sedans parked outside the curb.

Dominic Castellano walked through the front entrance.

He was dressed in a pristine charcoal three-piece suit, looking towering, broad-shouldered, and powerfully commanding. But instead of an entourage of armed enforcers, he was holding a leash in one hand.

Barnaby, now a full-grown, magnificent golden retriever wearing a red silk bowtie, walked proudly beside him.

Following closely behind Dominic were Leo and Thomas, both wearing wide smiles and carrying massive bouquets of fresh white lilies and red roses.

Mara’s face lit up like a Christmas tree. She stepped out from behind the counter, walking straight into Dominic’s open arms.

Dominic wrapped his arms securely around her waist, pulling her up into his chest and pressing a long, sweet kiss to her lips right in front of the entire shop. The crowd erupted into warm applause and cheers.

“Congratulations, my love,” Dominic murmured against her lips as he set her feet back down.

“You’re late,” Mara teased, her hazel eyes sparkling with love as she adjusted his silk tie. “The grand opening was at eight.”

“I had to ensure the neighborhood security detail was properly positioned,” Dominic smiled, looking around the bustling, beautiful bakery. “Your family looks happy.”

“We are happy,” Mara whispered, reaching out to hug her brother Sean, who walked over to shake Dominic’s hand with deep, masculine gratitude.

“Don Castellano,” Sean said warmly, gripping Dominic’s hand firmly. “Thank you for bringing my family back together.”

“Call me Dominic, Sean,” Dominic replied smoothly, giving the younger man a respectful nod. “We are family now.”

Dominic turned back to Mara, pulling a small, velvet-lined box from his inner jacket pocket.

The room went dead silent once again as the formidable crime boss dropped down onto one knee on the polished wooden floorboards of the bakery.

Mara gasped, her hands flying to her mouth as tears immediately welled up in her eyes.

Dominic opened the box, revealing a breathtaking platinum ring set with a brilliant, cushion-cut diamond surrounded by delicate sapphire accents.

“Mara O’Leary,” Dominic said, his deep baritone voice echoing through the silent bakery, filled with absolute, unwavering devotion. “Six months ago, you walked into my dark life, sat in my chair, and taught me how to live again. You gave me back my heart. Will you do me the absolute honor of becoming my wife?”

Mara didn't hesitate for a single second.

“Yes!” she cried out, her voice ringing clear and true. “Yes, absolute yes!”

Dominic stood up, sliding the breathtaking ring onto her finger, and pulled her into a fierce, passionate kiss as the entire bakery—her mother, her brother, her old neighbors, and Dominic’s hardened security team—erupted into roaring cheers and applause.

Barnaby let out a loud, happy bark, jumping up to rest his front paws against Dominic’s hip, joining in the celebration.
