Chapter 4 - THE BURIED VOW

The wind rustled through the high leaves of the maple trees.
Rebecca sat on the cold stone, holding her child, as the truth of her husband's death finally revealed itself after three years of dark, empty confusion.
“A roadside accident...” Rebecca sobbed, her shoulders shaking. “The police... the insurance company... they all said he lost control of his truck...”
“I made them say that,” Adriano admitted softly, his head bowed in shame. “The Moretti family was hunting down anyone connected to that night. If the news had reported that an electrician from West Virginia had saved Adriano Falcone, Moretti’s men would have wiped out his entire family to send a message.”
He looked up at her, his dark eyes filled with absolute remorse.
“I had to cover it up,” Adriano said. “I paid off the county coroner. I sealed the police files. I sent my men to West Virginia to find Thomas’s widow and child, to give them a safe house and millions of dollars...”
“We were gone,” Rebecca realized, her voice trembling. “The day after the funeral, Thomas’s landlord evicted us because we couldn't pay the back rent. I packed our things and moved us to a shelter in Ohio before anyone could find us.”
“I searched for you for two years,” Adriano said. “My investigators searched every database in the country. But you had moved under your maiden name’s bank accounts, living off cash, moving from town to town to survive.”
He looked down at the flagstones, where water was still dripping from Rebecca’s hair.
“Eighteen months ago, my placement agency brought a new maid into this house,” Adriano whispered. “I was in Italy negotiating shipping routes. By the time I returned, you were already working in the service wing. You kept your head down. You never spoke to me. You stayed in the shadows.”
He reached out, his thick, scarred thumb gently wiping a tear from Rebecca’s cheek.
“It wasn't until three months ago that I saw your employment application file in my manager’s office,” Adriano confessed. “I saw Thomas’s name listed under 'deceased spouse.' I saw the birth certificate of Clementine.”
Rebecca looked at him in total bewilderment. “You... you knew who I was for three months?”
“Yes,” Adriano said.
“Then why?” Rebecca asked, her voice rising with a mixture of confusion and hurt. “Why did you leave me in the basement? Why did you let me scrub your floors? Why did you let your wife treat me like dirt?”
Adriano took a deep, agonizing breath.
“Because my house was not safe, Rebecca,” Adriano revealed, his eyes burning with a dark, dangerous intensity. “Genevieve’s father, Senator Arthur Vance, has been working secretly with the remnants of the Moretti syndicate to take down my empire. Genevieve was placed in my life as a political marriage, but she was a spy for her father.”
He looked toward the mansion's dark upper windows, where Genevieve was currently trapped in her room.
“If Genevieve or her father had known who you were,” Adriano explained, “they would have used you and Clementine as leverage against me. They would have kidnapped Thomas’s daughter to force me to surrender my shipping docks.”
He reached out and gently laid his hand over Clementine’s small shoulder.
“I kept you in the shadows to keep you alive,” Adriano said. “I spent the last three months setting a trap for Genevieve’s father, waiting for the exact moment to strike and wipe them out completely. I was going to reveal everything to you next week, once the danger was gone.”
He looked down at the wet pool, his jaw setting into concrete.
“But tonight... my wife pushed you into the water. And sixty people laughed at the family of the man who saved my life.”

Adriano stood up to his full, imposing height. The air around him seemed to drop ten degrees.
“The trap is sprung early,” Adriano declared, his voice ringing with absolute, terrifying authority. “No one disrespects the bloodline of Thomas Hail in my house and survives.”
