Chapter 8 - THE FALL OF THE SENATOR

“Adriano!” Senator Vance shouted, trying to maintain his calm, political composure as red laser dots danced across his chest. “This is madness! I came for my daughter! You have no right to hold Genevieve against her will!”

Adriano stepped out onto the second-floor marble balcony, looking down at the Senator like an emperor looking down at a condemned traitor.

“Your daughter pushed the widow of Thomas Hail into my pool last night, Arthur,” Adriano said, his voice echoing through the grand foyer.

Senator Vance frowned, his brows furrowing in confusion. “Thomas Hail? Who the hell is Thomas Hail? Some dead nobody from West Virginia? You’re risking an empire over a maid’s dead husband?”

Adriano’s dark eyes flashed with a lethal, terrifying heat.

“Thomas Hail was the man who saved my life three years ago when your friends in the Moretti syndicate tried to burn me in a car,” Adriano revealed.

Senator Vance’s face drained of all color. His hand holding the pistol began to tremble violently.

“You... you knew?” Vance stammered.

“I have known for three years,” Adriano said coldly. “I waited until you consolidated your assets, until you put every dollar of your dirty money into my shipping lines, and until you brought all your remaining mercenary captains into one place.”

Adriano raised his right hand.

“Marcus,” Adriano commanded. “Execute order twenty-two.”

Across Providence, at the exact same second, federal agents and state police officers swarmed Senator Vance’s private estate, his corporate offices, and his offshore bank accounts, seizing forty million dollars in illegal assets based on encrypted files Adriano had delivered to the U.S. Attorney two hours prior.

Inside the foyer, Senator Vance looked around at his twelve men, who were looking at the thirty laser sights pinned to their chests and slowly dropping their weapons onto the marble floor, one by one.

Clatter. Clatter. Clatter.

“Drop the gun, Arthur,” Adriano ordered.

Senator Vance looked up at Adriano, his political career destroyed, his fortune seized, his life forfeit. The chrome pistol slipped from his numb fingers, clattering loudly against the marble tile.

Dominic and four capos rushed down the stairs, tackling Vance to the floor, pinning his arms behind his back, and snapping heavy steel cuffs onto his wrists.

“Where is Genevieve?” Vance choked out, his face pressed against the cold stone.

Adriano walked slowly down the grand staircase, his heavy boots echoing in the quiet foyer. He stopped in front of the fallen Senator.

“Genevieve will spend the rest of her life in a federal prison for conspiracy to commit murder and treason,” Adriano said flatly. “And you, Senator... will answer for the death of Thomas Hail.”

Adriano turned to Dominic.

“Take them to the federal marshals waiting at the perimeter gate,” Adriano commanded. “Clean up my driveway. And tell the kitchen to prepare breakfast for my guests in the vault.”
