Chapter 10 - Power and Permission

One year later.

The sun was setting over the rooftops of Milan, painting the sky in brilliant hues of violet, orange, and gold.

High above the city, on the private penthouse terrace of Vieri Tower, a gentle evening breeze rustled the white linen curtains surrounding the outdoor patio.

Alessia stood near the marble balustrade, looking out over the glowing skyline of the city she had once navigated as a broke, exhausted cleaning woman. Below, the bustling streets of Navigli and Montenapoleone hummed with life.

In the distance, the cathedral spire of the Duomo glowed under golden floodlights—a timeless symbol of resilience and beauty.

A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped gently around her waist from behind.

Enzo pulled her close against his chest, resting his chin on her shoulder, inhaling the soft scent of her perfume and the evening air.

“What are you thinking about, mia wife?” Enzo whispered gently, his hands resting over hers on the marble railing.

Alessia smiled, turning her head slightly to kiss his cheek. They had been married two months ago in a quiet, breathtaking ceremony in Lake Como, surrounded by true friends, Nona Elena’s joyful tears, and the absolute devotion of two souls who had conquered the dark together.

“I was thinking about that elevator,” Alessia murmured, a nostalgic smile lighting up her eyes. “I was thinking about how terrified I was when the lights went out.”

Enzo chuckled softly, his breath warm against her skin. “You didn't look terrified. You looked like you were ready to tear my head off for pressing the buttons.”

“I was terrified of you,” she admitted quietly. “I knew who you were. I knew what men like you did to people who didn't submit.”

Enzo turned her around in his arms, looking down into her dark, expressive eyes with a depth of love that still took her breath away every single day.

“And now?” Enzo asked softly.

Alessia reached up, her hand gently tracing the familiar line of his jaw, her thumb brushing over his lips—the very same gesture he had used to intimidate her in the dark elevator long ago.

“Now,” Alessia whispered, her voice rich with absolute confidence and warmth, “I know that power isn't permission to hurt people, Enzo. Real power is the permission to protect the people you love.”

Enzo looked at her, his heart overflowing with a peace he had sought his entire life. He leaned down, brushing his lips against hers in a soft, lingering kiss that tasted of sweet wine and endless tomorrow.

Far below them, the elevator in Vieri Tower ascended smoothly through the glass shaft, carrying people up into the light. But on the top floor, high above the shadows of the past, the cleaning woman and the mafia boss stood together as equals—unbroken, unstoppable, and forever free.
