Chapter 3 - The Siege of Villa Vieri

Sirens did not wail at Villa Vieri. Instead, a quiet, red ambient light flashed silently in the hallways, signaling a perimeter breach.
Within seconds, the tranquil estate transformed into a military war zone. Armed men in tactical gear moved with practiced precision through the corridors, taking up defensive positions at every entry point.
Enzo grabbed Alessia’s arm—not roughly, but with an absolute, unyielding grip—and pulled her out of the study.
“Luca!” Enzo roared as the scar-faced lieutenant sprinted up the stairs holding an automatic rifle.
“Boss!” Luca shouted over the muffled sound of suppressed gunfire echoing from the gardens outside. “It’s the Moretti family! They used a delivery truck to breach the east perimeter wall! There are at least twelve shooters in the courtyard!”
The Moretti family was the principal rival syndicate in Lombardy—a ruthless clan that had been trying to expand their drug operations into Milan for years, stymied only by Enzo’s strict prohibition of narcotics in his territory.
“Take six men and flank them from the west garden,” Enzo ordered, his voice remarkably calm as gunfire shattered the glass windows in the lower drawing room. “Keep them away from the main house.”
“Boss, what about the girl?” Luca asked, glancing at Alessia.
“She stays with me,” Enzo commanded.
He led Alessia down a narrow, hidden staircase concealed behind a tapestry in the hallway. They descended into the reinforced basement level—a subterranean bunker equipped with independent power generators, communications arrays, and reinforced steel blast doors.
Inside the bunker, Nona Elena was already waiting, accompanied by two armed guards. The old woman was sitting calmly on a leather sofa, holding her rosary beads, though her eyes filled with immense relief when she saw Alessia.
“Alessia! Mia cara!” Nona Elena cried out, reaching for her.
Alessia broke away from Enzo and rushed to her grandmother’s side, throwing her arms around the old woman. “Nona! Are you alright? Did they hurt you?”
“I am fine, child,” Nona Elena whispered, patting Alessia’s back. “The men took care of me. But you... you are trembling.”
Enzo stood near the blast door, monitoring the tactical radio headset clipped to his collar. Gunfire, heavy explosions, and frantic shouted orders crackled through the speaker.
“Moretti’s men are pushing through the foyer,” a voice reported over the radio. “They’re looking for the safe room!”
Enzo’s eyes darkened. “How did they know the layout of the house, Marco?”
“There’s a mole in the security detail, Don Vieri,” Marco’s voice replied over the radio, laced with panic. “Someone gave them the layout map and the security codes for the outer gates!”
Alessia watched Enzo from across the room. She expected him to show fear, or at least frustration. Instead, a terrifying, icy calm settled over him. He was a master predator in his natural element.
He pulled a second handgun—a compact silver semi-automatic—from a holster beneath his arm and walked over to Alessia. He held it out to her, handle first.
“Do you know how to use this?” Enzo asked flatly.
Alessia stared at the cold steel weapon. “No. I’ve never touched a gun in my life.”
Enzo grabbed her right hand, pressed the grip into her palm, and wrapped her fingers around the frame. He placed his hand over hers, pulling the slide back with a sharp, mechanical clack to chamber a round.
“Safety is off,” Enzo said, his voice slow and precise, ignoring the distant thud of an explosion above them. “Point it at the chest of anyone who enters that door who isn't me, Luca, or Marco. Squeeze the trigger firmly. Do not hesitate. If you hesitate, you die.”
Alessia looked down at the gun in her hand. It was heavy, cold, and smelled of gun oil. Fear clawed at her throat, but she looked up into Enzo’s gray eyes and nodded once.
“I won't hesitate,” she said firmly.
Enzo looked at her for a long second, a flicker of dark pride shining in his eyes. “Good girl.”
He turned to the two guards in the room. “Seal the blast door behind me. If anyone tries to breach it from the outside without my voice command, activate the air filtration lockdown.”
“Enzo!” Alessia called out before he could step through the door.
He paused, looking back over his shoulder.
“Don't die,” she said, the words slipping out of her mouth before she could stop them. “You still owe me a proper explanation.”
A genuine, breathtaking smile illuminated Enzo’s face. “I never leave a debt unpaid, Signorina.”
The heavy steel blast door slid shut with a deep, echoing hiss, locking Alessia, her grandmother, and the guards inside the bunker.
For twenty agonizing minutes, the world outside the blast door was filled with the muffled sounds of absolute violence. Thunderous shotgun blasts, rapid automatic rifle fire, and the occasional agonizing shriek echoed through the reinforced walls. Alessia stood in the center of the room, both hands gripping the silver handgun, her eyes locked onto the steel door, her body frozen in a defensive stance.
Nona Elena prayed softly in the corner, her voice a soothing background hum amidst the chaos.
Suddenly, the mechanical locks on the blast door groaned.
The heavy steel began to slide open.
Alessia raised the gun instantly, taking aim at the opening, her finger tightening against the trigger just as Enzo had taught her.
A tall figure stepped through the smoke clearing in the doorway.
It was Enzo.
His white shirt was splattered with blood—none of it his own—and his knuckles were raw and bruised. He carried his smoking handgun at his side. He stepped into the room, his eyes scanning the space until they landed on Alessia, who was still pointing the gun directly at his chest.
He stopped, raising one eyebrow slightly.
“You can lower the weapon now, Alessia,” Enzo said softly. “The house is clear.”
Alessia lowered the gun, her hands shaking so violently she nearly dropped it. The reality of what she had just survived washed over her, and her legs suddenly felt like water. She stumbled backward, but before she could hit the floor, Enzo was there.
He caught her around the waist, pulling her flush against his chest. His arms wrapped around her, strong, solid, and warm, holding her up against the crushing weight of the world.
Alessia buried her face in his neck, inhaling the familiar scent of sandalwood, tobacco, and gunpowder. She didn't care that he was a mob boss. She didn't care that he was dangerous. In that moment, surrounded by blood and steel, he was her anchor.

And as Enzo held her tightly against his heart, his hand resting gently against the back of her hair, he whispered words that would change everything:
“The mole was found, Alessia. It was someone high up in my organization. And tomorrow... we tear down the family that paid him.”
