Chapter 7 - The Master of the House

The single word silenced Claire more effectively than the fall.

Ethan had never called her that. Not in private, not in whispers, and certainly not in front of anyone else.

Across the foyer, Vanessa’s grip on Claire’s wrist loosened slightly as she froze in shock, staring at the little boy.

Behind Ethan, a shadow fell across the archway.

Adrian Vale entered the foyer.

He did not shout. He did not run.

That was what made every single person in the room go utterly, terrifyingly still.

He wore his charcoal suit, his overcoat hanging loosely from his left hand. Snow from the storm outside had melted into small, glistening droplets across his broad shoulders. The pale scar on his left temple stood out starkly against his suddenly pale, rigid skin, and the black ink wrapped around his wrist was visible where his cuff had ridden back.

His gray eyes shifted slowly across the scene.

First to Ethan, who was shaking near the stairs.

Then down to Claire, lying on the cold marble floor.

Then to the crimson blood pooling beneath her hand.

Finally, his gaze settled on Vanessa’s fingers wrapped around Claire’s wrist.

The temperature in the vast foyer didn't just drop—it turned to absolute zero.

"Take your hand off my wife," Adrian said.

His voice was terrifyingly quiet. It was not a request. It was an order issued by a man who possessed the absolute authority to end lives.

Vanessa released Claire’s wrist instantly, pulling her hands back as if she had touched a white-hot iron stove.

Not because Adrian had moved toward her.

Because he hadn't.

Two heavy security guards who stood near the front doors straightened up instinctively, their hands dropping to their belts, their faces rigid with fear.

Claire knew that look on Adrian's face. She had seen it on him only twice before—when analyzing high-stakes corporate threat matrixes. It was the expression of a man who had spent half his life learning precisely how to make other human beings terrified of what he might do next.

"Adrian," Claire called out weakly from the floor.

His storm-gray eyes shifted to her instantly.

One word.

That was all she said. But it stopped him in his tracks.

For two terrifying seconds, a war raged across Adrian's sharp features—unbridled, lethal fury fighting against a profound, desperate restraint.

Then Ethan ran across the marble.

The small boy threw himself down beside Claire, his little arms wrapping tightly around her neck, his body trembling violently.

Claire caught him with her uninjured left arm, pulling him close against her chest, ignoring the sharp pain in her knee.

"I’m okay, Ethan," Claire whispered into his dark hair. "I’m okay."

"You’re bleeding," Ethan cried, his small face buried in her shoulder.

"Just a little cut, sweetie," Claire assured him softly. "It doesn't hurt."

"She hurt you," Ethan whispered fiercely, his eyes flashing with sudden rage as he glared over Claire’s shoulder at his aunt.

Across the foyer, Vanessa stared between Adrian, Claire, and the boy, her face pale, her lips trembling.

"Your... your wife?" Vanessa stammered, her high-pitched voice squeaking with pure disbelief. "Adrian... what are you talking about?! She's your housekeeper!"

Nobody answered her.

Beside Vanessa’s leather handbag on the console table lay the white electronic access card—the master key she had tried to steal.

Claire’s eyes locked onto that card.

And suddenly, the broken sapphire bracelet scattered across the floor did not matter.

Neither did her bleeding hand.

Neither did the pain in her knee.

The card mattered.

Because Claire had been waiting three weeks for Vanessa Arden to touch that exact card.

Claire looked up into Adrian's burning gray eyes.

"Don't touch anything," Claire instructed softly.

Adrian’s jaw tightened, his chest heaving with heavy, controlled breaths. But he nodded once. He stopped.

Everyone in the grand foyer stopped breathing.

Claire slowly pushed herself up from the marble floor, keeping Ethan tucked safely against her side.
