Chapter 8 - The Paper Trap

"What card?" Vanessa gasped, backing away toward the front doors. "I didn't touch any card!"
"You touched it, Mrs. Arden," Claire said, her voice rising with crystalline clarity as she stood straight, wiping a smudge of blood from her palm with a clean linen handkerchief from her pocket. "The surface of that white security card is coated with a microscopic, non-transferable chemical marker used for forensic access verification."
Vanessa’s eyes darted to the card on the tray, then down to her own manicured right hand.
"You see," Claire continued, stepping forward, her navy dress pristine despite the fall, "three weeks ago, I conducted an administrative audit of Vale Dynamics' subsidiary accounts. I discovered that two point eight million dollars had been systematically siphoned out of the family's charitable trust over three years."
Julian Arden’s face went completely gray. He grabbed the edge of the coat rack to keep from falling over.
"The wire transfers required a master security fob," Claire explained, looking directly at Julian, then at Vanessa. "A fob that only three people in this family possessed. Tonight, you came here to steal the secondary physical access card to cover up the paper trail before the federal audit begins on Monday morning."
"You're lying!" Vanessa screamed, her voice cracking hysterically. "You're making this up to cover for stealing my jewelry!"
"Search her bag," Adrian commanded flatly.
Two security officers stepped forward instantly. One held Vanessa’s arms behind her back while the other unzipped her designer leather handbag, turning it upside down onto the marble table.
Out spilled three stolen financial ledgers, two encrypted flash drives, and a set of duplicate keys to the Vale estate safe.
"It appears," Claire said coolly, "that the theft in this foyer was not committed by the domestic coordinator."
Vanessa stared at the stolen items spread across the table. Her arrogant, vicious façade crumbled into complete, unadulterated panic.
"Adrian... please!" Vanessa wept, trying to twist out of the security guard's grip. "It was Julian! He made me do it! He had gambling debts in Dallas! He said we needed the money!"
"Shut up, Vanessa!" Julian shouted, his face red with sweat.
Adrian didn't look at his sister. He didn't look at Julian. He walked over to Claire, reaching out his large, warm hand to gently hold her injured wrist, examining the cut on her palm with deep, fierce concern.
"Mrs. Gable," Adrian called out without raising his voice.
The estate manager stepped out of the hallway, holding a medical first-aid kit and a mobile phone.
"The police are at the gates, Mr. Vale," Mrs. Gable reported efficiently. "And the state prosecutor is on line two."
"Have them arrested for grand larceny, corporate espionage, and felony assault," Adrian instructed coldly.
"No!" Vanessa shrieked as the front doors opened, letting in the flashing red and blue lights of three police cruisers that had pulled up the long stone driveway. "Adrian! I'm your sister! You can't do this to me!"
The officers stepped into the foyer, snapping steel handcuffs around Vanessa and Julian's wrists.
As they dragged Vanessa out into the howling blizzard, her high heels dragging uselessly through the snow, she looked back one last time.

She saw Adrian standing in the warm light of the foyer, his arm wrapped firmly around Claire’s waist, holding his son’s small hand, looking down at his wife with a look of absolute, fierce devotion.
Vanessa’s cruel smile was gone forever.
