Chapter 7 - The Shadow Cleanse

While Kate rested in the recovery ward over the next forty-eight hours, Lucian set to work executing the most ruthless corporate and personal restructuring of his entire career.

He didn't use violence. He didn't issue threats.

He used the absolute, terrifying weight of his vast financial resources and authority to dismantle the very walls that had isolated his family for two long years.

On the third morning, Lucian sat in the private executive conference room on the hospital’s top floor, facing his long-time Head of Global Security, Viktor Vance—a massive, battle-scarred former special forces operative who had managed Lucian’s shadow network for a decade.

Viktor laid out a thick dossier on the glass table.

“Mr. Avery,” Viktor began, his voice raspy. “I’ve reviewed the perimeter logs for Hawthorne Ridge over the last six months. As per your original standing orders from last year, my team kept a high-level passive surveillance grid around Mrs. Avery’s property.”

Lucian’s eyes narrowed into dark, icy daggers. “And why was I never informed that she was attending prenatal appointments at the local clinic in town?”

Viktor swallowed hard, shifting uncomfortably under Lucian’s lethal gaze. “Because, sir... Mrs. Avery intentionally registered under her maiden name, Katherine Alden, and paid for all medical services in cash from her personal estate trust. Furthermore, she personally approached my team’s lead operative four months ago.”

Lucian leaned forward, his hands resting flat on the table. “She spoke to your operative?”

“She did, sir,” Viktor confirmed, pulling a handwritten incident report from the file. “She told him that if he reported her pregnancy to you, she would file a formal civil stalking order against Avery Environmental Systems in public court, forcing our security operations into the public record. She knew that public exposure would compromise your shadow logistics. She played a brilliant tactical card, sir.”

A sudden, unexpected quiet laugh escaped Lucian’s throat—a low, genuine chuckle of absolute admiration for his wife’s sheer brilliance.

“She outmaneuvered my entire security apparatus,” Lucian said, his eyes gleaming with pride.

“She did, sir,” Viktor admitted with a wry smile. “She’s an Avery, through and through.”

Lucian stood up from the conference table, buttoning his crisp, fresh charcoal suit jacket.

“Effective immediately, Viktor, liquidate the covert surveillance teams,” Lucian commanded flatly. “Disband the tracking units assigned to my family.”

Viktor frowned, genuine concern flashing across his hardened face. “Sir... with respect, your rival syndicates in Europe are still monitoring your domestic movements. If you pull the protective perimeter—”

“I am not pulling protection, Viktor. I am changing its nature,” Lucian interrupted, his voice dropping into a register of iron authority. “We are no longer hiding in the shadows, watching my wife through telephoto lenses like she is a target. We are building a permanent, visible, state-of-the-art residential security infrastructure at Hawthorne Ridge.”

He pulled a set of architectural blueprints from his leather bag, spreading them across the table.

“I am converting Hawthorne Ridge into our primary family estate,” Lucian explained, pointing to the grand perimeter layouts. “I want a full underground medical bay installed in the east wing, capable of handling any pediatric emergency. I want a dedicated team of five high-grade medical specialists on twenty-four-hour retainer at the house. And every guard on that property will answer directly to Kate.”

Viktor stared at the blueprints, taking in the breathtaking scope of the operation. “And your corporate operations in Manhattan?”

“I am appointing a Chief Operating Officer to handle daily corporate management,” Lucian declared, looking out the window toward the rising sun. “My job for the next ten years is right here. I am going to be a full-time father.”

Viktor stared at his boss for three long seconds before bowing his head with deep, profound respect. “Consider it done, Mr. Avery.”
