Chapter 8 - The Kangaroo Hold

By the second week of Julian’s life, the tiny boy had made astonishing progress in the NICU.

His weight had increased to three pounds, eight ounces. The oxygen mask had been removed, replaced by a simple, low-flow nasal cannula, his tiny lungs expanding with growing strength every single day.

On a quiet Tuesday afternoon, Nurse Miriam Hale stepped into Pod Four carrying a soft, warm rocking chair, placing it directly beside Julian’s isolette.

“Today is a major milestone, Mom and Dad,” Miriam announced with a warm smile. “Julian’s skin temperature is stable enough for skin-to-skin contact. We call it Kangaroo Care.”

Kate, who was now fully mobile and recovering remarkably fast from her C-section, gasped in delight. “Really? We can hold him out of the box?”

“Absolutely,” Miriam said, opening the glass doors of the incubator. “And today, Dad goes first.”

Lucian froze, stepping back half a pace, his eyes widening in sudden panic. “Me? No... no, Miriam, I... my hands are too large. I’m too rough. Let Kate hold him.”

Kate laughed softly, reaching out to grab Lucian’s hand, pulling him back toward the chair. “Lucian Avery... you stood up to armed cartel bosses and cold-blooded politicians, and you’re afraid of a three-pound baby?”

“I’m not afraid of him,” Lucian rasped, looking down at the microscopic infant in the incubator with genuine terror. “I’m afraid of breaking him.”

“You’re not going to break him, big guy,” Miriam said firmly, unbuttoning Lucian’s crisp linen shirt, exposing the broad, warm skin of his muscular chest and dark tattoos. “Sit down in that chair, take off your shirt, and keep still.”

Lucian swallowed hard, slowly sitting in the plush rocking chair, unbuttoning his shirt completely, revealing his broad chest.

With expert care, Miriam lifted tiny Julian out of the isolette, keeping his monitoring wires neatly organized, and gently laid the microscopic baby directly onto Lucian’s bare chest, covering both father and son with a thick, warm fleece blanket.

The moment the baby’s bare skin touched Lucian’s chest, the transformation was instantaneous.

Julian let out a tiny, soft sigh of absolute contentment, resting his dark head right over Lucian’s heavy, beating heart. His tiny legs curled up like a little frog, his hand resting flat against the dark Latin tattoos carved into his father’s skin.

Lucian stopped breathing entirely for three seconds.

He looked down at the tiny, warm weight resting over his heart, feeling the faint, rhythmic rise and fall of his son’s tiny chest against his own.

A warmth so deep, so profound, so intensely powerful flooded through Lucian’s body that his whole frame began to tremble softly.

Slowly, instinctively, his massive, broad hands came up, cupping around the baby’s back, shielding him like a broad iron shield.

Kate sat in a chair right beside them, her eyes brimming with happy tears as she watched the most feared man in the shadow world gently rock back and forth in a wooden chair, holding their microscopic son against his heart with a tenderness that defied words.

On the overhead monitor, Julian’s blood oxygen levels surged to a perfect one hundred percent.

“You see that?” Miriam whispered, pointing to the screen. “He knows your heartbeat, Lucian. He’s been hearing that heavy rhythm from inside the womb every time you were near her. You’re his anchor.”

May you like

Lucian closed his eyes, resting his chin gently over his son’s head, smelling the sweet, pure scent of fresh baby lotion and warm skin.

“I’ve got you, Julian,” Lucian whispered, his rough voice vibrating straight into the baby’s small body. “I’ve got you forever.”
