Chapter 9 - The Return to Hawthorne Ridge

Seven weeks later.

The early spring sunshine was breaking across the Hudson Valley, melting the last lingering patches of snow into shimmering streams of clear water along the lawns of Hawthorne Ridge.

A long convoy of three dark, sleek, armored Mercedes sedans pulled smoothly up the long gravel driveway, stopping before the grand front entrance of the historic estate.

The front door opened, and a team of professional, highly trained medical staff and estate attendants stood lined up along the stone porch, waiting to welcome the family home.

Lucian stepped out of the lead vehicle, carrying a heavy, plush leather infant car seat with extreme, obsessive care, ensuring not a single draft of cool spring wind touched the interior.

Kate stepped out right beside him, looking radiant, healthy, and vibrant, dressed in a warm cream cashmere sweater and long skirt, her chestnut hair falling in rich waves over her shoulders.

Inside the car seat, seven-week-old Julian Avery was sleeping peacefully, weighing a healthy, plump six pounds, four ounces, dressed in a tiny soft blue wool onesie.

They stepped onto the porch.

Lucian paused at the threshold of the front door, looking down at the polished slate entryway where, two months prior, he had dropped his briefcase containing divorce papers, expecting to end his life.

Now, the hallway was pristine, warm, filled with the rich scent of blooming white lilies, fresh timber smoke, and baking bread.

Kate turned to look at him, reaching up to gently lay her hand against his cheek.

“What are you thinking about?” she asked softly.

Lucian looked into her clear hazel eyes, then down at the sleeping baby in the car seat between them.

“I’m thinking that I walked into this house eight weeks ago as a dead man walking,” Lucian rasped, his voice filled with deep, emotional resonance. “And I’m walking in today as the richest man on earth.”

Kate smiled, her eyes gleaming with absolute love as she leaned up and pressed a sweet, lingering kiss against his warm lips.

“Welcome home, Lucian,” she whispered.

They walked through the front door together, the heavy oak doors closing softly behind them, sealing out the cold world, enclosing their family inside an impenetrable fortress of pure, unshakeable love.
