Chapter 8 - The Villa in Tuscany

Six months later.

The afternoon sun shone like liquid gold over the rolling green hills of Tuscany, painting the stone walls of the private Moretti estate in warm shades of terracotta and bronze.

The air smelled of blooming jasmine, cypress trees, and woodsmoke.

In the courtyard behind the main villa, Naomi sat at a long wooden table, sketching the distant vineyards in a small leather notebook. She wore a simple white sundress, her dark hair tumbling loosely over her shoulders, her skin glowing with a healthy, sun-kissed warmth.

The sound of footsteps echoed across the gravel path.

Dominic walked out from the olive grove, wearing a dark linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows and simple trousers. He looked younger, relaxed, the harsh lines of tension on his forehead completely smoothed away by six months of sunshine, quiet mornings, and peace.

He walked up behind her chair, leaning down to rest his chin on her shoulder, looking at her sketch.

“You captured the curve of the hill well,” he noted softly, kissing her cheek.

“I had a good model,” Naomi smiled, leaning her head back against his shoulder.

Dominic pulled a small wooden chair beside her and sat down, taking her hand in his. His large, broad fingers locked effortlessly with hers, his gold wedding band glinting in the Italian sunlight.

In New York, the Moretti syndicate was now managed by Leo and a council of trusted captains, operating under strict, legitimate business guidelines that Dominic had spent three months reorganizing from afar. The violence, the street wars, the blood—it had been buried along with Vincent Marcone.

Dominic had stepped back from the shadows, choosing instead to live as a man.

“Leo called this morning,” Dominic mentioned casually, taking a grape from the bowl on the table. “The shipping ports in Brooklyn are completely legal now. The federal investigation was officially closed yesterday.”

Naomi turned to look at him, her dark eyes sparkling with quiet joy. “And how does the former Don feel about being an honest businessman?”

Dominic smiled, reaching out to gently tuck a strand of hair behind her ear.

“The former Don is far more interested in his wife’s evening plans,” Dominic murmured, his voice dropping into that deep, raspy register that made her heart skip a beat.

Naomi let out a quiet laugh, setting her sketch pad aside. She reached across the table, taking his face in both of her warm hands, tracing the faint silver scar on his cheekbone with her thumb.

“My evening plans involve a walk through the olive grove,” she whispered. “And a husband who doesn't check his watch every five minutes.”

Dominic caught her wrist, kissing the palm of her hand with a tender, reverent devotion that made her body melt against his.

“I destroyed all my watches three months ago,” Dominic promised softly. “I have all the time in the world.”
