Chapter 6 - THE PUBLIC REVELATION

The failed assassination attempt at the Westchester estate changed everything.
By Tuesday morning, Dominic had summoned the top five investigative journalists in the state to a private, highly secure conference room at the Costello Syndicate headquarters in Midtown Manhattan.
Penelope sat at the head of the dark mahogany conference table. She wore an elegant burgundy dress designed specifically for her by Dominic’s private tailor—a dress that didn't hide her curves, but celebrated them, accentuating her narrow waist and full bust while exposing the scarred line of her shoulder with pride.
Dominic stood directly behind her chair, his broad hands resting on the leather backrest, an imposing guard against any threat.
The press room was packed, cameras flashing continuously.
"Miss Gallagher!" a reporter from the New York Times called out. "Is it true that Richard Gallagher ordered a hit on you yesterday?!"
Penelope leaned into the central microphone. Her voice did not tremble. The fear that had trapped her for eight years had been burned away by the strength Dominic had given her.
"My father," Penelope announced clearly, her image broadcasted live to millions of televisions across the country, "tried to kill me yesterday because I am living proof of his family's monstrous crimes."
She reached up, slowly sliding the red fabric of her dress down her shoulder, exposing the thick, puckered burn scars to the news cameras.
The room gasped loudly. Flashbulbs went off in a blinding frenzy.
"Eight years ago," Penelope continued, her voice echoing with absolute authority, "my sister, Victoria Gallagher, locked me inside a burning building in the Hamptons. My father paid off local authorities to bury the police report and locked me away in their basement so Victoria’s reputation would remain clean for her high-society debut."
She pointed directly into the primary news camera lens.
"Yesterday, when Dominic Costello demanded a ransom for my return, my father told him to put a bullet in my head. I am standing here today to tell the world that Richard Gallagher and Charles Montgomery are corrupt criminals who treat human lives like disposable garbage."
The room erupted into absolute chaos. Reporters were shouting, news anchors were frantically reporting live on air, and social media platforms were exploding with outrage.
Within thirty minutes, the stock price of Gallagher Development Corp crashed by sixty percent. Federal prosecutors announced an immediate criminal investigation into Richard Gallagher for attempted murder, evidence tampering, and child abuse.
Dominic leaned down, his lips touching the shell of Penelope’s ear as the cameras flashed.
"You just destroyed his empire, my queen," Dominic whispered smoothly.

Penelope looked up into his striking blue eyes, a genuine, beautiful smile breaking across her face for the first time in her life.
"No," Penelope replied softly. "We did."
