Chapter 9 - THE HEALING

Three months later.
The nightmare of the Gallagher family had officially come to an end. Richard Gallagher had been sentenced to thirty years in federal prison without parole for arson cover-ups, attempted murder, and corporate fraud. Victoria was serving ten years in a state facility.
The Gallagher assets had been liquidated by court order, with seventy-five percent of the multi-billion dollar estate transferred directly to Penelope as legal compensation for years of abuse and false imprisonment.
Penelope was now one of the wealthiest women in New York. But she didn't stay in Manhattan.
She lived in the grand Westchester estate with Dominic.
It was a crisp spring morning. Penelope sat on the sunlit terrace overlooking the rolling green lawns of the estate, wearing a light cotton dress that flowed comfortably over her plush curves. She was sketching in a leather notebook—something she had loved to do as a child before her father forbade it.
Strong arms wrapped around her waist from behind, pressing a warm kiss against her neck.
"Good morning, beautiful," Dominic murmured, his deep voice vibrating against her back.
Penelope leaned back into his broad chest, placing her hands over his arms. "Good morning, Dominic."
Dominic sat down in the wicker chair beside her, taking a sip of black coffee. He looked at her drawing—it was a detailed, beautiful architectural design for a new community center in Queens.
"The board approved the funding for the Gallagher Foundation shelter yesterday," Penelope shared with a radiant smile. "We’re opening three new care centers for body-positive mental health and trauma survivors next month."
"I knew you would change the city," Dominic smiled softly, reaching out to take her hand.
He looked down at her shoulder. The red cotton dress sat comfortably off her left shoulder, showing the thick burn scars in the clear morning sunlight. Penelope no longer tried to cover them with heavy scarves or high collars. She owned them.
Dominic leaned over, pressing a gentle, slow kiss directly onto the puckered scar tissue of her shoulder.
Penelope shivered slightly, feeling a warm tear prick her eyes. "Dominic... why do you kiss my scars?"
Dominic looked up into her dark, beautiful eyes, his icy blue gaze filled with a fierce, profound devotion that took her breath away.
"Because every single scar on your skin tells me that you fought to survive until I could find you," Dominic whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "You are the strongest, most gorgeous woman I have ever known, Penelope. You cured the darkness in my life."
Penelope squeezed his hand tight, pulling his face toward hers and kissing him deeply, letting all the love she had held in her heart overflow between them.

She was no longer the wrong bride. She was no longer the hidden sister.
She was loved, cherished, and entirely free.
