Chapter 8 - THE CHESS MATCH

Richard Gallagher sat in the dimly lit corner of an abandoned shipping warehouse near the New Jersey border.

His suit was wrinkled, his hair messily unkempt, his multi-billion dollar empire completely shattered within forty-eight hours. His bank accounts were frozen by the federal government, his allies had abandoned him, and the police were hunting him across three states.

He had one remaining bag of cash—two million dollars—and a forged passport waiting on the wooden crate in front of him. A hired boat was scheduled to take him to international waters at midnight.

Suddenly, the heavy metal doors of the warehouse were blown off their hinges with a violent crash.

Flash-bang grenades erupted in the dark space, blinding Richard’s two hired guards before they could even draw their weapons. Syndicate enforcers swarmed the room, disarming the guards and pinning them to the floor in seconds.

Richard scrambled backward, reaching for his handgun on the crate.

A heavy boot slammed down onto his hand, crushing his fingers against the wood.

Richard howled in pain, looking up into the dark, lethal face of Dominic Costello.

Dominic kicked the handgun away, pulling Richard up by his shirt collar and slamming him violently against the steel support beam of the warehouse.

"Costello..." Richard choked out, his eyes wide with desperate terror. "Take the cash! Take the two million! Just let me leave the country!"

Dominic smiled—a cold, terrifying shadow of an expression that made Richard’s blood run completely ice-cold.

"Two million?" Dominic purred softly. "Richard, you offered me fifty million for your legitimate daughter, and then told me to shoot Penelope for free. You don't have enough money in the world to buy your way out of tonight."

Footsteps echoed across the concrete floor of the warehouse.

Richard turned his head, gasping as Penelope stepped out of the shadows, wrapped in a plush black wool coat, her face illuminated by the soft moonlight streaming through the shattered doors.

"Penelope!" Richard sobbed, trying to force a pathetic, loving expression onto his face. "Penny, my sweet girl! Tell him! Tell him to let your father go! I did everything to protect you! I kept you safe in the estate!"

Penelope walked up to him, stopping right in front of the man who had abandoned her to the flames and ordered her execution.

"You didn't protect me, Father," Penelope said, her voice dropping into a cold, unbreakable register. "You hid me because you were ashamed of my body, and terrified of my truth."

She reached into her coat pocket, pulling out a thick manila folder containing the original, unredacted police reports from the Hamptons fire—documents Dominic’s intelligence team had recovered from the retired police chief's private safe that morning.

"This goes to the Attorney General tonight," Penelope said softly, placing the folder on the wooden crate beside his forged passport. "You are going to spend the rest of your life in a maximum-security prison."

"You monstrous bitch!" Richard spat, his pathetic affection vanishing into pure, ugly venom. "You ruined this family! You were always a disgusting, fat mistake!"

Before the words had even fully left Richard's mouth, Dominic’s hand swung out.

Dominic slammed his fist hard into Richard’s jaw, knocking the older man unconscious instantly. Richard collapsed onto the dirty concrete floor in a heap.

Dominic wiped his knuckles with a silk handkerchief, looking at Penelope with absolute devotion.

"No one speaks to my woman like that," Dominic growled softly.

May you like

Penelope looked at him, her heart swelling with an overwhelming, radiant joy. "Your woman?"

Dominic stepped closer, wrapping his broad arms around her waist, lifting her chin with his thumb. "My woman. My queen. My everything."
