Chapter 5 - The Glass Castle

At 11:20 PM, the grand ballroom of the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Manhattan was buzzing with electric energy.
Dozens of high-society photographers, business journalists, city officials, and corporate executives gathered around a raised stage decorated with banners reading: Vascari Global & NYC Port Authority: A New Era of Logistics.
Grant Vascari stood near the front of the stage, looking magnificent in a hand-tailored tuxedo. Sloan Mercer stood by his side, glowing with triumphant pride as she coordinated the press teams, introducing Grant to influential city council members and major investors.
Grant was riding the absolute high of his life.
With this multi-billion-dollar city contract officially signed, Vascari Global would hold a absolute monopoly over all commercial logistics coming through the tri-state area. He would no longer be just a wealthy street boss; he would be an untouchable global tycoon.
"You look like a king, Grant," Sloan whispered into his ear, resting her manicured hand on his forearm. "The Mayor's representative just arrived. We sign the documents in fifteen minutes."
"Thank you, Sloan," Grant said, taking a glass of champagne from a passing waiter's tray. "This is just the beginning. Tomorrow, we announce the restructuring of the corporate board. I'm removing the old advisors."
"And your wife?" Sloan asked smoothly, her eyes gleaming.
Grant felt a tiny, momentary sting of guilt, but quickly pushed it down. "My lawyers are drafting the separation papers tonight. She'll get the Westchester house and a generous monthly allowance. That's more than fair for someone who brought nothing to the table."
Suddenly, Grant's secondary phone—the private encrypted line he used exclusively for high-level operational security—began vibrating violently in his inner coat pocket.
He frowned, stepping away from Sloan toward a quieter corner near the velvet curtains.
He answered. "Vascari."
"Grant! It's Sal!" his chief logistics coordinator at the Brooklyn docks yelled frantically over the sound of blaring sirens in the background. "We've got a total catastrophic lockdown down here!"
Grant's stomach dropped. "What are you talking about? What lockdown?!"
"The crane operators' union just walked off the job at Terminal 4!" Sal panicked. "All three hundred workers dropped their equipment and locked the gates! They're saying their union contract was revoked twenty minutes ago by the central labor council!"
"That's impossible!" Grant spat, his face flushing red. "I signed the union extension last month with Tommy Torrio!"
"Tommy Torrio just got suspended by his uncle Frankie!" Sal screamed over the noise. "Frankie Torrio himself showed up at the docks five minutes ago with fifty armed men! He's impounding all eighty of our commercial rigs sitting on the tarmac! He says Vascari Global is trespassing on private land!"
Grant felt a cold sweat break out across his neck. "Land? What private land?! We lease Terminal 4 from the city!"
"No, we don't!" Sal yelled back, his voice trembling with terror. "The city port authority leased the ground rights to an offshore holding company ten years ago! That holding company just voided our operating permit for non-compliance with regional labor rules! Grant... they're towing our trucks right now! All of them!"
Before Grant could process the nightmare unfolding on the phone, his primary corporate phone began ringing frantically in his hand.
It was his chief financial officer.
Grant switched lines, his breath coming in ragged hitches. "What is it, David?!"
"Grant, where are you?!" David screamed from his office at corporate headquarters. "Our master credit facilities just got frozen by the bank!"
"Frozen?! On what grounds?!"
"Someone logged into our primary server using root administrative access forty-five minutes ago!" David sobbed into the phone. "They exported our off-book tax records and transferred eighty-five million dollars of our liquid operating reserve out of the Cayman accounts!"
Grant's mind went completely blank. His knees felt suddenly weak.
Root administrative access.
There were only two people in the entire world who held master root encryption keys to Vascari Global's financial servers.
Himself... and Mara.
"Mara..." Grant whispered, his voice shrinking into a horrified, disbelieving squeak.
"Who is Mara?!" David yelled hysterically over the line. "Grant, the secondary lenders are triggering default notices right now because our liquidity fell below the required bond threshold! If you don't sign that city contract in ten minutes and deposit the fifty-million-dollar performance bond, Vascari Global is completely bankrupt!"
Grant stood frozen in the quiet corner behind the stage, his phone pressing against his ear, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped animal.
He turned his head slowly, looking back through the curtain at the bright, shimmering ballroom.

Sloan Mercer was standing near the press podium, smiling for cameras, completely unaware that the towering empire she was trying to marry into was collapsing like a house of cards in real time.
And then, the heavy double doors at the main entrance of the grand ballroom were pushed open.
