Chapter 8 - The Birth of Lily

Four weeks later.

The private maternity wing at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan was operating under maximum security. Four broad-shouldered guards in dark suits stood watch outside the floor's private entrance, while Marcus Vance personally monitored the hallway outside Room 402.

Inside the quiet, sunlit room, the soft, rhythmic sound of a newborn baby's breathing filled the warm air.

Mara lay back against plush white pillows, her face tired but radiant with absolute, overwhelming joy. Resting securely against her chest, wrapped in a warm pink flannel blanket, was little Lily Ellison.

She had seven pounds, four ounces of perfect health, a tuft of soft dark hair, and bright, clear gray eyes that looked remarkably like her grandfather's.

Sitting in the armchair beside the bed, holding a small silver rattle, was Warren Ellison.

The terrifying shadow boss of New York was currently making soft, ridiculous chirping noises at his newborn granddaughter, his eyes shiny with unshed tears of pure happiness.

"She has your chin, Mara," Warren whispered, gently stroking the baby's tiny hand with his thumb. "And my eyes."

"She's perfect, Dad," Mara said softly, kissing the top of Lily's head.

A quiet knock sounded at the door.

Marcus Vance stepped into the room, bowing his head respectfully. "Miss Mara, Mr. Ellison. I apologize for the intrusion."

Warren's face instantly shifted back into its calm, guarded composure. "What is it, Marcus?"

"Grant Vascari's court-appointed public defender just called the security desk downstairs," Marcus reported flatly. "Mr. Vascari's preliminary hearing concluded an hour ago. He was denied bail due to flight risk and has been remanded to Rikers Island pending trial."

Mara didn't even flinch. She kept her eyes fixed on her baby's face.

"He sent a message through his attorney," Marcus continued. "He is begging for permission to see the baby once before he is transferred to federal custody."

Warren turned his head toward Mara, leaving the decision entirely to her.

Mara took a slow, deep breath, feeling the warm, steady rise and fall of her daughter's chest against her heart.

"Tell his attorney no," Mara said, her voice clear, calm, and entirely without bitterness. "Grant Vascari gave up his right to be a father the moment he put an expiration date on our family. Lily will grow up knowing she is loved, protected, and surrounded by a real family. She doesn't need a ghost from a broken past."

Marcus nodded crisply. "Understood, Miss Mara." He bowed and stepped out of the room, closing the door softly behind him.

Warren reached over, resting his hand gently over Mara's and the baby's. "You made the right choice, sweetheart."

"I know," Mara smiled, looking down at her daughter. "We have a business to run, Dad. And a life to build."
