Chapter 6 - The Gathering Storm

Danger was never far from Gabriel Rossy's world.
While Clara’s life had stabilized into a beautiful rhythm of safety and comfort, the geopolitical tectonic plates of the city's underworld were violently shifting.
The Moretti Family—a ruthless rival syndicate that controlled the western distribution networks—had been aggressively eyeing Gabriel’s lucrative harbor trade routes for months. Over the past two weeks, two of Gabriel’s cargo trucks had been hijacked on the highway, and friction on the docks was rising to a dangerous boil.
Clara noticed the change inside Pier 9 immediately.
The number of armed security guards in the lobby doubled. Gabriel’s top lieutenants—a massive, scar-faced man named Viktor and a sharp, cynical strategist named Dominic—were in constant, tense meetings behind closed doors in Gabriel’s office.
Gabriel worked longer hours, his storm-gray eyes growing colder, harder, and more exhausted with each passing day.
Yet, no matter how intense the underworld war became, Gabriel ensured that Clara and Maya were completely shielded from the crossfire. Two armored sedans were assigned to follow Clara whenever she left the house, and a guard sat discreetly parked at the end of Elm Street twenty-four hours a day.
On a cold Friday afternoon in early December, Clara was reviewing the incoming freight manifests at her desk when the heavy elevator doors opened.
A man stepped out into the executive suite.
He was thin, slick, and wore a silver silk suit that looked like oil on water. He had narrow, rodent-like eyes, slicked-back black hair, and a sharp, fake smile that didn't reach his eyes.
It was Julian Moretti—the younger, erratic brother of the Moretti Family Don.
Behind him walked two towering bodyguards with their hands tucked inside their leather coats.
Clara immediately stood up from her desk, her hand dropping instinctively near her phone. "Can I help you, sir? This floor is restricted to executive staff."
Julian stopped in front of her desk, his narrow eyes scanning Clara’s face, her tailored dark suit, and the elegant gold watch Gabriel had gifted her for her one-month work anniversary.
"Well, well, well," Julian sneered, leaning his hands on her desk, his breath smelling of stale whiskey and mint. "So you're the famous new secretary. The little fish-plant girl Gabriel rescued from the gutter."
Clara kept her shoulders squared, her chin high. "Mr. Rossy is in a private meeting. If you don't have an appointment, I must ask you to leave."
Julian laughed—a high, grating sound. "Tell Gabriel that Julian Moretti is here to deliver a final notice regarding the Pier 9 distribution rights. Tell him he has twenty-four hours to hand over the southern berth, or things are going to get very bloody down here."
Before Clara could respond, the heavy mahogany doors of Gabriel’s office flew open.
Gabriel stepped out into the suite.
The air in the room instantly turned arctic. Gabriel didn't look at Julian's bodyguards. He didn't look at Julian’s slick suit. His gray eyes focused entirely on the fact that Julian was leaning over Clara’s desk, invading her personal space.
In two lightning-fast strides, Gabriel closed the distance.
He grabbed Julian by the front of his silk shirt collar, lifted the man off his feet, and slammed him hard against the marble pillar near the elevator.
BOOM!
Julian gasped for air, his face turning bright red as Gabriel’s thick forearm pressed against his throat. Julian's two bodyguards instantly drew their handguns, but before they could raise their barrels, Viktor and three Rossy guards materialized from the hallway, pressing heavy tactical pistols directly against the back of the bodyguards' heads.
"Drop them," Viktor growled.
The bodyguards dropped their weapons onto the soft rug with two heavy thuds.
Gabriel leaned in close to Julian’s face, his raspy voice dropping into a terrifying, whisper-thin register that made the hair on the back of Clara’s neck stand up.
"If you ever step onto this floor again," Gabriel said softly, "if you ever speak to Miss Claraara with disrespect again, I will personally feed you to the crabs at the bottom of Berth Four. Do you understand me, Julian?"
Julian nodded desperately, his eyes wide with paralyzing terror, his hands clawing at Gabriel’s arm.
Gabriel let go of his collar. Julian collapsed onto his knees on the rug, coughing violently, clutching his throat.
"Get him out of my sight," Gabriel commanded coldly.
Viktor and the guards grabbed Julian and his two bodyguards by their shoulders, dragging them into the open elevator car and slamming the doors shut.
The floor fell silent again.
Clara stood behind her desk, her heart racing, her breath short. She had just witnessed the absolute, terrifying violence that Gabriel was capable of delivering in a fraction of a second.
Gabriel turned toward her.
The terrifying killer vanished instantly. His gray eyes filled with deep concern as he walked over to her desk.
"Did he touch you, Clara?" Gabriel asked softly, his voice trembling slightly with suppressed rage. "Did he lay a hand on you?"
"No," Clara whispered, looking up into his eyes. "No, Gabriel. I'm okay."
Gabriel took a deep breath, running a hand through his dark hair. He looked down at her hands, which were shaking slightly against the mahogany desk.
Without a word, Gabriel reached out, taking both of her cold hands into his large, warm palms, holding them tight.
"I won't let them hurt you, Clara," Gabriel swore softly, looking deep into her eyes. "I will burn this entire city to the ground before I let anyone bring harm to you or Maya."
May you like
Clara looked at his strong, protective face, feeling a profound wave of emotion wash over her. She squeezed his hands back with equal force.
"I know you will, Gabriel," she whispered. "I know."
