Chapter 7 - The Betrayal

The storm broke on a frozen Thursday night in mid-December.

A heavy snowstorm had swept across the city, blanketing the streets in three inches of white slush.

Clara was at home on Elm Street. Maya was fast asleep upstairs in her lavender room, wrapped tightly in her warm blankets. Clara sat in the cozy living room before the crackling brick fireplace, sipping a hot cup of tea, reading a book.

At 10:30 PM, her personal cell phone rang.

She looked at the caller ID. It was Dominic—Gabriel’s chief strategist and head of logistics data.

Clara picked it up immediately. "Dominic? Is everything okay?"

"Clara! Thank God you picked up!" Dominic’s voice sounded frantic, background noise carrying the loud roar of heavy wind and sea waves. "We have a massive emergency at Pier 9! A fire broke out in Storage Warehouse B! Gabriel is on-site trying to clear the staff, but the main access codes to the emergency sprinkler valves were wiped from the server during a cyber attack!"

Clara stood up, dropping her book onto the sofa. "Wiped? How?"

"It’s the Morettis! They breached our internal network!" Dominic shouted over the wind. "You have the hard-copy master override codes in your private desk safe at Pier 9! You're the only one who knows the physical key combination! Clara, if we don't get those override codes in fifteen minutes, Warehouse B is going to explode! Gabriel is inside!"

Clara’s blood ran cold. Gabriel is inside.

"I'm coming right now!" Clara said frantically.

"I have a driver outside your house right now!" Dominic said. "Hurry!"

Clara ran upstairs, checked on Maya, and quickly briefed Mrs. Gable—the sweet elderly neighbor who lived next door and acted as Maya’s night nanny—asking her to stay in the house. Clara pulled on her heavy winter coat, grabbed her purse, and sprinted out the yellow front door into the snow.

A dark sedan was idling at the curb.

Clara threw open the passenger door and jumped inside. "Take me to Pier 9! Fast!"

The driver didn't answer. He slammed his foot on the accelerator, the tires spinning on the slick snow before catching traction, speeding away down Elm Street.

Clara looked at the driver’s profile.

He was not one of Gabriel’s regular security team. He was a thin man with a scarred neck, wearing a dark leather jacket.

A cold realization struck Clara like a physical blow.

She looked out the window. The car wasn't heading south toward the harbor piers. It was speeding west—toward the abandoned industrial meatpacking district.

"Where are you taking me?" Clara demanded, her hand reaching for her door handle. "This isn't the way to Pier 9!"

The driver reached into his jacket, pulled out a short silver revolver, and pointed it directly at her side without turning his head.

"Sit back and keep your mouth shut, lady," the driver grunted. "Or I'll put a hole through your seat."

Clara’s heart hammered against her ribs in absolute panic. Dominic lied to me.

Dominic—Gabriel’s trusted strategist—had betrayed the Rossy Syndicate. He had forged the emergency phone call to lure Clara away from her safe house and into the hands of the Moretti Family.

Clara forced herself to take a slow, deep breath, recalling Gabriel's words from weeks ago: I hire people who don't break when life pushes them into the mud.

She didn't scream. She didn't panic.

Sliding her hand quietly into her coat pocket, Clara located her phone. She couldn't look at the screen, so she relied on muscle memory. She unlocked the screen, pressed the speed-dial button mapped to Number 1—Gabriel’s direct line—and left the call open.

She dropped the phone back into her deep pocket, letting the microphone pick up every sound.

"Julian Moretti paid Dominic a lot of money for you, girl," the driver chuckled darkly, turning the car down a deserted, snow-covered alley between two massive, decaying brick warehouses. "You're the leverage that's going to make Gabriel Rossy surrender his harbor rights tonight."

Clara leaned close to her pocket, raising her voice so the phone microphone would catch every word clearly.

"Gabriel will kill you for this," Clara declared, her voice firm, resolute, and completely devoid of fear. "He will find this meatpacking warehouse, and he will tear you and Julian Moretti apart."

The driver slammed on the brakes, stopping the car outside a large, rusted iron gate.

"Shut up!" the driver barked, poking the barrel of the revolver into her ribs. "Get out of the car!"
