Chapter 9 - Blood and Snow

Inside the abandoned cold storage room of Building Four, the air was freezing.

Frost coated the rusted iron hooks hanging from the ceiling tracks. A single yellow floodlight hung from an overhead beam, casting harsh shadows across the concrete floor.

Clara stood tied to a heavy wooden post in the center of the room, her hands bound behind her back with thick yellow nylon rope. Her coat had been pulled away, leaving her in her thin white shirt, her breath blooming in pale clouds in the freezing air.

Julian Moretti stood five feet away, wearing a heavy fur-lined coat, holding a glass of scotch, a cruel, triumphant sneer on his thin face. Four heavily armed Moretti soldiers stood around the perimeter, holding assault rifles.

"He won't come for you, little girl," Julian sneered, taking a sip of his scotch. "Gabriel Rossy is a businessman. He doesn't risk his empire for a secretary he picked up out of the gutter."

Clara looked at Julian through the cold gloom. Her lips were blue, her body shivering uncontrollably, but her eyes were filled with pure, unyielding fire.

"He isn't coming for his empire, Julian," Clara said, her teeth chattering, but her voice sharp as glass. "He's coming for you."

Julian’s sneer faltered slightly. He stepped forward, raising his hand to strike her—

BOOM!

A deafening explosion shattered the front iron doors of the warehouse.

The heavy steel doors flew off their hinges, crashing onto the concrete floor with a sound like thunder. A massive black armored SUV plowed through the opening, crushing two Moretti guards beneath its heavy steel bumper, spinning in a tight circle before coming to a halt.

"WHAT THE FELL?!" Julian screamed, dropping his glass of scotch, scrambling backward behind his guards. "KILL THEM! KILL THEM ALL!"

The Moretti guards raised their assault rifles, opening fire on the armored SUV. Bullets pinged harmlessly off the reinforced bulletproof glass and steel plating.

Then, the driver and passenger doors flew open simultaneously.

Gabriel Rossy stepped out into the gunfire.

He moved with terrifying, precision lethality. His dark handgun barked twice—BANG! BANG!—and two Moretti guards collapsed onto the concrete, instantly silenced.

Viktor and four Rossy operatives vaulted out of the rear doors, tactical shotguns roaring, filling the warehouse with smoke, fire, and absolute chaos.

Within thirty seconds, all six Moretti guards were dead or dying on the blood-stained concrete.

Julian Moretti panicked. He grabbed Clara by her hair, pulling her back against his body, drawing a silver snub-nosed revolver from his coat, pressing the barrel against her temple.

"STOP! STOP OR I'LL BLOW HER HEAD OFF!" Julian shrieked, his voice cracking in absolute, hysterical terror.

The gunfire ceased instantly.

Smoke drifted through the cold storage room, smelling of gunpowder, hot iron, and copper blood.

Gabriel walked slowly forward through the haze. He didn't look at the dead bodies. He didn't look at the gun in Julian's hand. His gray eyes were locked entirely onto Clara’s face, assessing her blue lips, her trembling frame, and the red mark where Julian had pulled her hair.

Gabriel stopped ten feet away. He lowered his handgun to his side.

"Let her go, Julian," Gabriel said. His voice was unnaturally calm—a quiet, terrifying void that chilled the air far more than the freezing temperature.

"Back off, Gabriel!" Julian screamed, his arm shaking violently, pressing the gun barrel harder into Clara’s skin. "Give me a helicopter to the airfield and full immunity, or I kill her right now! I swear to God I'll do it!"

Clara looked into Gabriel’s gray eyes across the ten-foot gap.

She didn't see fear in him. She saw absolute, unwavering certainty.

"Do you remember what I told you at the dock, Clara?" Gabriel asked softly, ignoring Julian completely.

Clara swallowed hard through her frozen throat. "You... you said I don't break when life pushes me into the mud."

"That's right," Gabriel offered a tiny, almost invisible nod. "Duck."

Clara didn't hesitate for a microsecond. She dropped her weight instantly, bending her knees, sliding down the wooden post as far as her bound hands would allow.

BANG!

A single, razor-sharp gunshot rang out.

Gabriel had drawn his second sidearm with blinding speed, firing a single bullet that passed two inches over Clara’s head, striking Julian Moretti directly between the eyes.

Julian’s eyes rolled back. His grip on his gun loosened, and he collapsed backward onto the cold concrete floor, dead before he hit the ground.

Silence fell over the warehouse.

Gabriel dropped his weapons. He sprinted across the concrete, dropping to his knees beside Clara. His long, calloused hands worked frantically, pulling a tactical knife from his boot, slicing through the thick yellow nylon ropes binding her wrists.

The moment the ropes severed, Clara collapsed forward into his arms.

Gabriel wrapped his massive, heavy arms around her shivering frame, pulling her tightly against his broad chest, lifting her off the cold floor. He wrapped his thick, dry wool overcoat around her shoulders, shielding her from the freezing air.

"I have you," Gabriel rasped, his voice breaking with raw, overwhelming emotion as he pressed his cheek against her wet hair. "I have you, Clara. You're safe. You're safe."

Clara buried her face into the warm nook of his neck, smelling his cedarwood, tobacco, and rain. She wrapped her trembling arms around his neck, sobbing softly into his skin.

May you like

"I knew you'd come," she wept. "I knew you would."

Gabriel lifted her into his arms, carrying her easily out of the bloody warehouse and into the warmth of the armored SUV, never letting go for a single second.
