Chapter 7 - The Ledger of Shadows

Three weeks passed in the quiet luxury of the Rossi estate, turning the cold Chicago winter into a distant, harmless backdrop beyond the heavy estate walls.
Norah adjusted to her new role with a speed that surprised even Gabriel. She moved out of the guest quarters and into a pristine, sunlit private cottage located inside the estate’s secured inner gardens.
Her days were no longer spent on her knees scrubbing cold marble or handling harsh industrial chemicals. She sat beside Gabriel in his executive study, managing his private schedules, screening his confidential communications, and cataloging the massive volumes of legal financial documents that legitimized the Rossi empire.
With her sharp eye for detail—developed through years of meticulous cleaning work—Norah proved to be an extraordinary administrator. She caught subtle accounting discrepancies in dry-cleaning freight invoices that Gabriel’s expensive corporate accountants had missed for months, saving the holding company tens of thousands of dollars.
Her broken wrist was healing cleanly under Dr. Marcello’s continuous monitoring. The heavy white cast had been replaced with a sleek, lightweight fiberglass splint that allowed her fingers to move freely across a computer keyboard.
Yet, despite her elevated status, the dark nature of Gabriel’s world remained impossible to ignore completely.
It was a rainy Tuesday afternoon when the shadows of his empire breached the quiet peace of the study.
Gabriel was sitting at his desk, speaking softly in fluent Italian into a secure satellite phone, while Norah organized a stack of corporate real estate deeds near the tall bookshelf.
Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the study flew open without a knock.
Vincent rushed into the room, his dark coat soaked with rain, his heavy jaw clenched tight with intense anger.
Gabriel instantly hung up the phone, rising from his chair. “Report, Vincent.”
“It’s the Moretti crew out of South Boston, Boss,” Vincent said grimly, his voice tight. “They hit our secondary customs warehouse at the Port of Milwaukee twenty minutes ago. They executed two of our dock guards and seized three shipping containers of imported luxury textiles.”
Gabriel’s face transformed instantly. The relaxed, quiet man who had spent the morning calmly drinking tea with Norah vanished in a fraction of a second.
In his place stood the terrifying, iron-fisted mafia sovereign. His gray eyes turned into two shards of frozen glass. The air in the room seemed to drop ten degrees in an instant.
“Call Captain Dominici,” Gabriel ordered, his voice dangerously low and quiet. “Assemble twenty men at the West Loop staging site. We leave in ten minutes.”
Vincent bowed his head. “Yes, Boss.” He turned and sprinted back down the hallway.
Gabriel pulled a heavy leather holster from his lower desk drawer, strapping it across his broad shoulders before sliding two custom matte-black handguns into the leather sheaths.
Norah watched him, her heart hammering against her ribs with sudden, terrifying concern. For three weeks, she had seen only the gentle, protective side of Gabriel Rossi. Seeing him prepare for war brought back the stark, dangerous reality of who he truly was.
She stepped out from behind her desk, stopping right in front of him as he pulled his dark wool trench coat over his holsters.
“Gabriel...” she whispered, using his first name for the first time without realizing it. “Please... be careful.”
Gabriel stopped adjusting his leather collar. He looked down at her, his dark, hard expression softening instantly as he noticed the genuine worry shining in her eyes.
He stepped closer, reaching out with his right hand and gently cupping her soft cheek.
“I am always careful, Norah,” Gabriel said softly, his thumb brushing over her skin. “Stay inside the house. The perimeter guards have been doubled. I will return before midnight.”
“Promise me,” she urged, her fingers instinctively reaching up to lightly touch his wrist. “Promise me you’ll come back safe.”
Gabriel stared down into her dark eyes, a powerful, unspoken intensity passing between them in the quiet study.

“I have a very capable assistant waiting for me,” Gabriel whispered, his voice smooth as silk. “I wouldn't dream of keeping her waiting.”
He turned and walked out of the study, leaving Norah standing alone in the quiet room, her heart beating fast with a feeling she was no longer able to deny.
