Chapter 10 - The Phoenix and the Rose

Six months later.

The autumn sun set over the cliffside estate in Lake Como, Italy, casting golden and amber light across the deep blue waters of the lake.

The Moretti private villa sat surrounded by ancient cypress trees, blooming terraced gardens, and stone balconies that overlooked the surrounding mountains.

Tonight was our wedding reception.

There were no federal agents, no hidden cameras, no traitors lingering in the shadows. Only sixty of our closest friends, colleagues, and family—including Mrs. Carter, who had retired as head housekeeper to become the estate's estate manager, and Dr. Harris, who sat drinking wine with my mother.

I stood on the main stone terrace wearing a sweeping, ivory silk gown with delicate shoulder straps, my hair styled in soft waves adorned with small white orchids.

Around my neck sparkled my mother-in-law’s emerald necklace—its deep green stones glowing beneath the twilight sky.

Luca walked out onto the terrace behind me, wearing an immaculate black tuxedo. He wrapped his arms around my waist from behind, resting his chin gently on my shoulder, looking out at the calm, shimmering lake.

"What are you thinking about, my love?" he asked softly, kissing the side of my neck.

"I was thinking about four o'clock on a Thursday afternoon," I murmured, resting my hands over his on my waist. "I was thinking about how terrified I was pushing that heavy dessert cart across the dining room floor."

Luca spun me around gently in his arms, looking into my eyes with infinite tenderness.

"You pushed through the dark to bring the light into my life, Hannah," he whispered. "You saved me from a life built on lies."

"And you saved me from a life built on fear," I replied softly.

Down in the garden below, the string quartet began playing a slow, breathtaking Italian waltz.

Luca extended his hand to me, bowing with regal elegance. "May I have this dance, Mrs. Moretti?"

"Always, Mr. Moretti," I smiled.

May you like

He led me out to the center of the terrace beneath the glowing string lights and the vast, starlit sky. He pulled me close against his chest, his hand firm and loving at my back, and we began to dance.

My feet moved effortlessly across the stone floor—light, strong, and completely free of pain—as we waltzed into a future built on truth, honor, and an everlasting love.
