Chapter 9 - A New Dawn

Three months later.

Spring had arrived in Chicago, melting the dark winter ice and bringing life back to the city's parks.

The news of the Bellini downfall had dominated the headlines for weeks. Silvio and Vanessa Bellini were currently awaiting trial in a federal detention facility, facing over twenty years in federal prison with no possibility of bail, their assets completely seized by the government.

The Moretti family had undergone a total transformation. Under Luca’s direction, the organization had severed its illegal operations, transitioning entirely into legitimate real estate, international logistics, and green energy development.

I sat behind a sleek mahogany desk in my spacious, sunlit office on the twentieth floor of the Moretti Tower in downtown Chicago.

Large glass windows offered a breathtaking view of Lake Michigan. On my desk sat a plaque that read: HANNAH PARKER - ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT.

Over the past three months, our foundation had distributed three million dollars in educational grants to low-income families across the South Side, ensuring that young women and men would never have to endure physical abuse or financial desperation just to pay their rent.

A soft knock sounded at my office door.

"Come in," I called out warmly.

The door swung open, and Luca walked in.

He was wearing a perfectly tailored charcoal wool suit, holding a large bouquet of fresh white lilies and a small leather folder.

"Good afternoon, Director Parker," Luca smiled, stepping inside and setting the flowers on my desk.

"Good afternoon, Mr. Moretti," I laughed softly, standing up from my chair and leaning across the desk to press a gentle kiss to his lips.

Luca wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me close, inhaling the scent of my hair. Over the past ninety days, our bond had grown from quiet mutual respect into a deep, passionate, and unshakeable love.

"I brought you the finalized blueprints for the new youth athletic center in Lincoln Park," Luca said, opening the folder on my desk. "The city council approved the land permit this morning."

I scanned the architectural drawings, my heart swelling with pride. "It's beautiful, Luca. Absolutely beautiful."

Luca reached into his jacket pocket, pulling out a small, navy velvet box.

My breath caught in my throat. My eyes locked onto his face.

Luca didn't get down on his knees with theatrical grandiosity. He simply took my hand, sliding his long fingers into mine, looking into my eyes with a raw, profound devotion that made my soul tremble.

He opened the box.

Inside sat a stunning, three-carat oval-cut diamond set in a simple platinum band—elegant, pure, and brilliant.

"Hannah," Luca whispered, his deep voice thick with emotion. "Ten months ago, you walked into my house dragging your weight, fighting through pain just to survive. You showed me what true strength looks like."

He stroked my cheek with his thumb.

"I don't offer you a life of fear or shadows. I offer you my heart, my respect, and my whole life. Will you marry me?"

Fresh tears of absolute joy blurred my vision. I didn't hesitate for a single second.

May you like

"Yes, Luca," I whispered, throwing my arms around his neck, pulling him into a passionate kiss. "Yes! A thousand times, yes!"

Luca let out a deep, happy laugh, sliding the diamond ring onto my finger, before lifting me up in his arms and spinning me around in the bright afternoon sunlight streaming through the windows of our clean, bright future.
