Chapter 5 - The Snake in the House

The revelation hung in the cold air of the study like a toxic fog.

Silvio Bellini.

He was not just Vanessa’s father; he was Luca’s maternal uncle—the younger brother of Luca’s late mother, Isabella. For thirty years, Silvio had served as a trusted senior captain within the Moretti organization, controlling the highly lucrative riverfront shipping docks, cold-storage warehouses, and import channels along the Chicago River.

When Isabella Moretti died twenty years ago, it was Silvio who had stood beside a sixteen-year-old Luca at the cemetery. It was Silvio who had placed the velvet box containing Isabella’s emerald necklace into Luca’s hands, weeping openly, swearing on his sister's memory that he would protect Luca and the family honor until his dying breath.

And now, he was orchestrating the theft of his own sister's legacy three days before his daughter's wedding.

Luca didn't punch a wall. He didn't shout. He didn't throw his whiskey glass into the fireplace.

Instead, he slowly lowered himself back down into his desk chair. He closed his eyes for five long, terrifying seconds. When he opened them, the anger had retreated beneath a glacial layer of absolute, terrifying clarity.

"Silvio," Luca murmured, his voice sounding like two grinding millstones.

He looked across the desk at me.

"Are you entirely certain it was Silvio, Hannah?"

"Yes, Mr. Moretti," I said, my voice trembling but firm. "I've worked in this house for ten months. I know his face. He was wearing a dark gray suit with a gold pocket watch. When I stumbled into the room, he stepped deeper into the shadow of the window curtains, but I saw his face clearly in the vanity mirror. He was the one who snapped the velvet case shut before handing it to Miss Bellini."

Luca nodded slowly. The pieces of a much larger, darker treason were falling into place in his mind.

He picked up his desk phone again. "Daniel. Get back in here."

Three seconds later, the study door opened and Daniel Vance stepped inside, his hand resting instinctively near his holster.

"Boss?"

"Silvio Bellini is in on it," Luca said flatly.

Daniel’s eyes widened in genuine shock. "Silvio? But he's..."

"He's a traitor," Luca cut him off smoothly. "He and Vanessa aren't just stealing a necklace to pay off personal debts, Daniel. A four-million-dollar emerald necklace doesn't get quietly fenced through an auction house three days before an engagement wedding unless someone needs liquid cash fast."

Daniel’s face hardened as realization dawned on him. "A exit strategy. Or funding for a move."

"A takeover," Luca corrected coldly. "Silvio has been pushing for control of the eastern distribution routes for six months. He knows that once Vanessa marries me on Saturday, her legal standing in the family firm becomes absolute. But if he steals the real emeralds, replaces them with a high-grade fake in my master vault, and fences the original through an offshore auction house in London, he raises four million dollars in untraceable cash."

"Cash to hire outside muscle," Daniel realized, his voice grim. "To hit us from the inside during the wedding ceremony."

"Precisely," Luca said.

He stood up from his desk, walking slowly over to my wheelchair. He looked down at my pale, bruised face, his expression softening into something remarkably tender.

"Hannah," Luca said softly. "You have done this family a service you cannot possibly comprehend tonight."

"I just... I just didn't want them to hurt you, sir," I whispered honestly.

Luca reached out, gently patting my shoulder. "You are safe now. Daniel, have Mrs. Carter move Hannah into the master guest suite on the second floor. Place two armed men outside her door. No one enters that room except Dr. Harris and Mrs. Carter. If anyone else so much as breathes near her door, shoot them."

"Understood, boss," Daniel bowed.

"And Luca?" I asked, looking up at him as Daniel gripped the handles of my wheelchair to turn me toward the door.

Luca stopped, looking back at me. "Yes, Hannah?"

"What are you going to do?"

A dark, lethal smile touched the corners of Luca Moretti’s lips—a smile that promised total, uncompromising retribution.

"I am going to let my uncle and my fiancée think their plan is working perfectly," Luca said softly. "Right up until the moment they step up to the altar."
