Chapter 4 - The Toxin of Fear

The ride back to Westchester was conducted in absolute, suffocating silence.
Isabella sat in the leather back seat of the armored SUV, her hands wrapped tightly around a bottle of water Paul had handed her. Beside her, Matteo stared out the tinted window at the passing highway lights, his jaw clamped shut so tightly the muscles along his cheekbones stood out like cords.
He was still trembling slightly—not with fear, but with the lingering adrenaline of a predator that had almost slaughtered its prey.
When they arrived at the estate, Matteo opened his own door, stepping out into the cold rain without waiting for the guards. He walked briskly up the steps and straight into his private study on the ground floor, slamming the double doors behind him.
Isabella stood in the grand foyer, watching the doors.
Rosa hurried out from the kitchen, looking anxious. "Isabella! Are you alright? Paul called ahead and—"
"I'm fine, Rosa," Isabella said quietly. "Is he alright?"
Rosa sighed softly, looking toward the study. "He hasn't been that angry since his brother was killed seven years ago, my dear. When he got the call that men were near your studio, he drove from Midtown in twelve minutes. He almost flipped his car on the bridge."
Isabella felt a strange, aching throb in her chest.
She turned and walked down the hallway, stopping outside the heavy mahogany doors of his study. She took a deep breath, lifted her hand, and knocked softly.
"Leave me, Paul," Matteo's harsh voice roared from inside.
"It's Isabella," she said cleanly.
A long silence followed. Then came the heavy thud of footsteps, and one of the double doors opened.
Matteo stood in the doorway. He had stripped off his vest, his shirt unbuttoned at the collar, his dark hair damp with rain. He looked exhausted, haunted, and strangely raw.
"You shouldn't be near me right now," he said quietly, refusing to meet her eyes.
"Why?"
"Because you saw what I am today," he replied, his voice dropping into a rough whisper. "You saw the monster your father traded you to. You saw how easily I can take a life."
Isabella looked at him—really looked at him. She saw no arrogance, no triumph, no cruelty in his stance. She saw a man who was deeply, profoundly terrified that he had frightened her.
Without a word, she stepped past him into the study.
The room was dimly lit by a single desk lamp. On the heavy oak desk sat a glass of whiskey, untouched.
"I wasn't afraid of you today, Matteo," she said softly, turning around to face him as he closed the door.
He chuckled dryly, a bitter sound. "You yelled at me not to execute a man in front of you, Isabella. Your hands were shaking."
"My hands were shaking because three men had broken into my shop!" she snapped, stepping toward him. "My hands were shaking because I thought Jimmy Falcone was going to hurt my mentor! I wasn't shaking because of you!"
Matteo stared at her, stunned.
"You protected me," she continued, her voice softening, though her gaze remained fiercely steady. "You came through that door like an avalanche because someone threatened me. Do you really think I'm so foolish that I can't tell the difference between a man who protects me and a man who wants to harm me?"
Matteo stood motionless near the door. His breath hitched slightly as she crossed the rug, stopping directly in front of him.
"My brothers spent twenty years telling me that men like you only care about power, territory, and control," Isabella said, reaching out her hand. For the first time since their wedding day, she initiated the touch, resting her soft fingers gently against his jaw.
His skin was warm, roughened by dark stubble. She felt his entire body go completely rigid at her touch.
"They lied," she whispered, looking up into his dark amber eyes. "You're not a monster, Matteo. You're my husband."
Matteo closed his eyes, leaning his cheek slightly into her palm—a gesture of such immense, vulnerable surrender that it made Isabella's breath catch in her throat.
"I swore to myself I would never bring the violent reality of my life near you," he murmured, his voice thick with unexpressed emotion. "When I saw his hands near your face... I felt something break inside my head, Isabella. If he had touched you, I would have burned this city to the ground."
"Then I'm glad you didn't," she smiled gently. "Because I quite like New York."
Matteo opened his eyes, his gaze locking onto hers with a burning, intoxicating intensity that sent a wave of heat straight to her core. He reached up, his large, warm hand covering hers against his jaw, his thumbs gently smoothing over her skin.
They stood there in the quiet, dimly lit study, the space between them suddenly feeling electrically charged. The quiet boundary they had maintained for three weeks seemed to thin, dissolving into the warm air.
"Isabella..." he breathed, his voice a low warning. "If you don't step back now, I won't be able to let you go."
Isabella didn't step back.

Instead, she slid her other hand up his broad chest, feeling the heavy, rapid thud of his heart beneath his shirt.
"Who said I wanted to step back?" she whispered.
