Chapter 5 - The Unspoken Accord

The air in the study shifted from tension to something thick, sweet, and intoxicatingly dangerous.
Matteo’s breath caught. His hand slid from her jaw down to the back of her neck, his broad fingers tangling into the soft dark waves of her hair. He didn't pull her violently; he simply supported her head, gently tilting her face upward as he lowered his mouth to hers.
The first kiss was not brutal or demanding, as she had once feared a mafia boss’s touch would be. It was slow, agonizingly reverent, and filled with a deep, pent-up hunger that made her knees feel instantly weak.
Isabella let out a soft gasp against his lips, her hands clutching at the crisp cotton of his shirt as she pulled herself closer against his broad frame. The heat of his body radiated through her, burning away the last lingering chill of the rainy afternoon.
Matteo groaned softly, a low, rumbling sound deep in his chest. His arms wrapped around her waist, lifting her effortlessly off her feet and setting her down on the edge of his heavy mahogany desk.
He stepped between her knees, his hands framing her waist, his thumbs tracing the soft swell of her hips through her sweater.
"Isabella," he breathed against her lips, his forehead resting against hers, his breath hot and ragged. "Are you sure? Tell me now. Tell me if you want me to stop."
Isabella reached up, framing his face with both hands. She looked into his amber eyes—no longer black with rage, but dark with a fierce, absolute devotion that belonged only to her.
"Don't stop," she whispered clearly. "Don't ever stop, Matteo."
He kissed her again, deeper this time, his tongue parted her lips to taste her, claiming her with a slow, masterclass patience that made her head spin. Her hands slid up to his broad shoulders, feeling the thick, powerful muscle beneath his shirt as she pulled him closer, surrendering completely to the overwhelming warmth of his touch.
He lifted her into his arms, carrying her out of the study and up the grand staircase in the quiet darkness of the estate.
When he reached her bedroom, he did not turn on the lights. The room was bathed in the soft, silver glow of the moonlight filtering through the tall windows.
He set her down gently beside the large bed, his hands moving to the hem of her sweater. He raised his eyes, asking for permission with a look. She nodded, raising her arms as he slid the soft knit over her head, letting it fall to the floor.
When he looked at her in the moonlight—wearing only her lace bra and trousers—his breath hitched.
"You are magnificent, Isabella," he murmured, his voice husky and rough.
He unbuttoned his shirt, discarding it onto a chair, revealing a torso forged by years of physical discipline—broad chest, defined abdominal muscles, and several faded scars that told the story of his violent past. But to Isabella, those scars were not terrifying; they were proof of his survival, proof of the strength that now protected her.
He stepped closer, his hands warm and steady as he slid her trousers down her hips, his touch trailing over her bare skin, leaving a trail of fire in its wake.
When they finally lay together beneath the heavy silk sheets, Matteo moved with an incredible, patient reverence. He mapped every inch of her body with his lips—her neck, her collarbones, the curve of her waist, the soft flare of her hips. He took his time, ensuring that every touch dissolved her fear, building a slow, unbearable ache deep within her center until she was breathless, whispering his name into the dark room.
And when he finally joined their bodies together—slowly, gently, with a careful consideration that brought tears of pure emotion to her eyes—the last lingering wall between them shattered completely.

There were no bargains in that room. There were no families, no shipping routes, no heirs to guarantee a ceasefire.
There was only Matteo and Isabella, bound together not by a contract of blood, but by a choice freely made in the quiet hours of the night.
