Chapter 9 - The Fortress of Two

When Matteo's SUV pulled into the driveway of the Westchester estate at eleven o'clock that night, the rain had stopped, leaving behind a clear, starry sky.

He walked into the grand foyer, dropping his leather coat onto the chair.

Isabella was waiting for him in the drawing room, sitting near the warm fire with a book in her lap. She was wearing a soft cashmere sweater, her legs pulled up beneath her on the sofa.

When she heard his footsteps, she looked up, her dark eyes filled with quiet anxiety. "Is it over?"

Matteo walked across the room, leaving the dark, violent world of the syndicate outside the door. He knelt beside the sofa, taking her hands in his.

"It's over," he said softly. "Jimmy Falcone is dealt with. Don Carmine affirmed the peace. And your father..." Matteo chuckled dryly. "...your father was so embarrassed by your brilliance that he couldn't even look me in the eye when I left."

Isabella let out a long, shuddering breath, her shoulders relaxing as she leaned forward, resting her forehead against his. "Thank God."

"You saved us tonight, Isabella," he murmured, his thumb smoothing over her knuckles. "If you hadn't found those offshore account numbers in Jimmy's shell corporation filings, we would have been walking into a federal trap."

"I told you," she smiled gently, opening her eyes to meet his. "I'm good at finding old things that people try to hide."

Matteo reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small velvet box. He placed it gently in her hands.

Isabella blinked. "What's this?"

"Open it."

She lifted the lid. Inside lay a breathtaking vintage silver brooch shaped like a delicate olive branch, encrusted with small, brilliant emeralds. It was an exquisite piece of nineteen-century Italian craftsmanship.

"I had my team track it down at an auction house in London three weeks ago," Matteo said softly, a rare, shy edge in his voice. "You mentioned during our second dinner that you loved emerald work from the Victorian period."

Isabella stared at the brooch, tears of pure emotion welling in her eyes. "Matteo... you remembered that?"

"I remember every single word you've ever said to me, Isabella," he whispered, framing her face with his warm hands. "From the moment you walked into that restaurant in Brooklyn, I knew I was done for. I didn't marry you to keep the peace between our fathers. I agreed to the marriage because it was the only way I could have you in my life."

Isabella froze, her heart hammering against her ribs. "What?"

"Your father thought he was negotiating a truce," Matteo admitted, his eyes burning with raw, unvarnished honesty. "He didn't know I had offered to drop twelve million dollars of his family's debt to ensure your name was on that contract. I didn't want a political alliance, Isabella. I wanted you."

Isabella stared at him, stunned, tears finally spilling over her lashes—not out of sadness, but out of an overwhelming, radiant joy that filled every dark corner of her heart.

"You terrifying, brilliant man," she whispered, laughing through her tears as she threw her arms around his broad neck, pulling him down onto the sofa with her.

Matteo wrapped his arms around her, holding her so tightly she could feel the steady, powerful rhythm of his heart beating against her own.

"I love you, Isabella," he murmured against her skin, saying the words for the first time—not as a mafia boss, not as a leader of men, but as a husband who had surrendered his heart completely to his wife.

"I love you too, Matteo," she whispered back, leaning up to kiss him with all the passion, devotion, and fire she possessed. "I love you too."
