Chapter 10 - The Protector’s Vow

That evening, a soft, gentle rain fell over Chestnut Hill, washing the summer air clean and cool.
Inside the cozy bedroom of the east wing, Emma was tucked securely under her pink blankets, her cream teddy bear resting against her pillow.
Sophia sat on the edge of the bed, reading a bedtime story, her soft voice drifting through the quiet room.
I stood by the doorway, leaning against the wooden frame, watching the peaceful scene unfold.
Lying on the plush carpet right beside Emma’s bed, his massive head resting on his front paws, was Bruno. His dark eyes were soft, watching the little girl with unshakeable, eternal vigilance.
As Sophia finished the last page of the book, she closed the cover softly and leaned down to kiss her daughter’s forehead.
“Goodnight, my sweet girl,” Sophia whispered.
“Goodnight, Mommy,” Emma murmured drowsily, her eyes already half-closed. She reached her small arm over the side of the bed, her tiny fingers dropping down to touch Bruno’s broad ear. “Goodnight, Bruno.”
The massive Cane Corso let out a long, contented sigh, gently pressing his nose against her small hand before resting his head back down onto the rug.
Sophia stood up, walking quietly over to the doorway where I stood waiting.
We stepped out into the quiet corridor, closing the door softly, leaving a small crack open so the warm hallway light could spill inside.
“He really is her guardian angel, isn't he?” Sophia whispered softly, slipping her arms around my waist, looking up into my eyes.
“He always was,” I murmured, wrapping my arms around her, pulling her close to my chest, kissing her forehead gently. “Bruno just needed someone gentle enough to show him who he truly was.”

Down the hallway, through the quiet warmth of the manor, the peaceful sounds of a home restored to safety echoed softly into the night.
And inside the bedroom, lying faithfully beside the child who had healed his pain with a warm washcloth and a gentle heart, the feared Cane Corso kept watch—a silent, unbeatable sentinel of love, loyalty, and redemption.
