Chapter 8 - The Restoration of Honor

By dawn, the news of Pier 42’s fall had sent shockwaves through the entire underground network of the tri-state area.
Dominic Valenti’s empire was dismantled in a single night. His weapons shipments were seized by federal authorities following an anonymous tip from my legal team, and his remaining capos surrendered their territories without firing a single shot.
The Moretti syndicate was stronger, more united, and more feared than it had ever been in fifty years.
When my convoy pulled back through the iron gates of my Chestnut Hill estate, the morning sun was rising over the snow-covered pine trees, painting the winter sky in brilliant shades of gold and pink.
Sophia and Emma were waiting on the stone steps of the main entrance, wrapped in warm coats, watching the vehicles arrive.
As I stepped out of the lead SUV, Bruno leaped out behind me, bounding across the snow toward the little girl.
“BRUNO!” Emma squealed with delight, dropping her teddy bear onto the steps and throwing her small arms completely around the massive dog’s neck.
Bruno dropped his heavy body onto the snow, letting out happy, snorting sounds as Emma buried her face in his soft black neck fur, laughing hysterically as he licked her cheek.
Sophia stepped down the stairs, looking at me with deep, emotional relief in her eyes.
“It’s over, isn't it?” she asked softly.
“It’s over,” I confirmed, walking up to her, taking her gloved hands in mine. “Valenti is gone. The estate is secure. You and Emma are safe forever.”
Sophia looked down at her daughter playing with the dog, tears of gratitude shining in her eyes.
“I don't know how to thank you, Mr. Moretti,” she murmured.
“You don't need to thank me, Sophia,” I said gently. “In fact... I should be thanking you. If you hadn't brought Emma into the courtyard four days ago... if she hadn't sat down with that warm washcloth... I would have put Bruno down. And I would have been destroyed by my own blind trust in a traitor.”

I looked down at the child and the beast.
“Emma saw what none of us could see,” I added softly. “She saw the heart of a protector.”
