Chapter 4 - The Escalation

By November, the tension inside the Cole residence had reached a breaking point.

Vanessa had moved most of her wardrobe into the master suite. Her perfume—a heavy, suffocating floral scent—replaced the subtle smell of lemon oil and salt air that had always filled the house.

She began holding daily meetings with wedding planners, florists, and caterers in the grand living room, turning the home into a chaotic circus of silk swatches, wine tastings, and loud arguments over guest lists.

Noah hated it.

The loud voices, the unfamiliar people constantly marching through the hallways, and the sudden loss of his routine overwhelmed the three-year-old. He became clingy, throwing tantrums when Grace left his sight for even five minutes, and refusing to sleep in his own bed.

One Tuesday afternoon, Ethan returned home early from a board meeting to review some final acquisition documents in his study.

As he walked down the marble hallway near the formal living room, he heard raised voices.

"I told you three hours ago that these arrangements needed to be placed on the dining table!" Vanessa’s voice snapped, shrill and furious.

"Miss Hart, the florist brought white lilies," Grace’s calm voice replied. "Ethan—Mr. Cole—is severely allergic to lilies. His wife... Claire... mentioned it in the house manual. I asked the driver to take them back and bring white roses instead."

"I don't care about the house manual!" Vanessa yelled. "And don't you dare bring up Claire to me! I am the mistress of this house now! I chose white lilies because they match the tablecloths for the rehearsal dinner!"

"If Mr. Cole breathes in pollen from sixty stems of lilies in an enclosed room, his throat will constrict," Grace said, her tone firm, steady, and unyielding. "I am not allowing those flowers into this house."

Ethan paused in the hallway, standing just out of sight near the heavy mahogany pillars of the dining room archway.

"You insolent little servant!" Vanessa spat. "Who do you think you are? You're a glorified babysitter! You live off my fiancé’s charity! You think because you sleep in the guesthouse and wear cheap clothes that you have a vote in how this family operates?"

"I don't care about the tablecloths, Miss Hart," Grace said coldly. "I care about Ethan's health and Noah's safety. That is my job."

"Your job is to do what you are told!" Vanessa stepped closer to Grace. Through the reflection in the decorative mirror hanging on the corridor wall, Ethan could see Vanessa’s face twisted in rage, her fingernails digging into her palm. "I have tolerated you for six months because Ethan felt sentimental about you. But the moment the ink is dry on our marriage license, you are gone. Do you hear me? You will be packed and off this property within an hour!"

Grace didn't flinch. She stood her ground, looking directly into Vanessa’s eyes.

"If Ethan fires me, I will leave," Grace said softly. "Until then, the lilies stay outside."

Vanessa looked as if she were about to burst a blood vessel. "Get out of my sight!"

Grace turned calmly and walked down the service corridor toward the kitchen.

Ethan stood hidden behind the pillar, his heart pounding in his chest like a war drum. His blood ran hot and cold at the same time.

He saw the raw, hideous reality of the woman he was planning to marry. Vanessa didn't just dislike Grace; she envied her. She hated the quiet authority Grace carried. She hated that Noah looked at Grace with pure devotion while ignoring Vanessa completely. She hated that Grace knew the house, knew Ethan's habits, and knew Claire's legacy better than Vanessa ever could.

Ethan took a step toward the living room, intending to confront Vanessa right then and end the engagement on the spot.

But before he could clear the doorway, his phone buzzed violently in his pocket.

It was his lead legal counsel.

"Ethan, we have a massive emergency," his attorney said urgently over the line. "The European Union competition commission just launched an unexpected antitrust inquiry into our software platform. They're threatening an immediate freeze on our Munich acquisition. You need to get on a private jet to Brussels right now."

Ethan closed his eyes, pressing two fingers against the bridge of his nose. "How long?"

"Forty-eight hours minimum. The board is assembling at the airport hangar in forty minutes."

Ethan looked toward the living room, where Vanessa was now loudly complaining on her phone to her mother about the flower arrangements. Then he looked down the hallway toward the nursery, where he could hear Grace softly singing a nursery rhyme to Noah.

"I'm on my way," Ethan said into the phone.

He didn't bid farewell to Vanessa.

He walked down the back hallway to the nursery. Grace was sitting on the rug, helping Noah piece together a wooden puzzle of the solar system.

When Ethan walked in, Grace looked up, her expression immediately shifting back into her professional mask.

"Ethan," she said quietly. "Is everything alright?"

Ethan knelt beside them on the rug. He reached out and touched his son's head, smoothing down the fine, soft brown hair that was so much like Claire's.

"I have to fly to Europe for two days," Ethan said, looking directly into Grace's eyes. "A corporate emergency."

Grace nodded. "We'll be fine here."

Ethan reached out and took Grace’s hand.

It was the first time he had touched her intentionally in over a year.

Grace froze. Her breath hitched in her throat, her brown eyes widening as she looked down at his large, warm hand wrapping around her fingers.

"Grace," Ethan said, his voice raw with an emotion he had suppressed for far too long. "When I get back on Friday... we are going to talk. Really talk. Just you and me."

Grace stared at him, her lips parting slightly. "Ethan... you're getting married in three weeks."

"No," Ethan said softly, his thumb tracing a gentle circle over the back of her knuckles. "I don't think I am. Just protect him until I get back. Please."

Grace looked at him for a long, silent moment. Then, slowly, her fingers squeezed his back.

May you like

"I will always protect him," she whispered. "Safe travels, Ethan."

Ethan kissed the top of his son's head, stood up, and walked out into the humid Miami afternoon, unaware that the forty-eight hours he was about to spend in Europe would change the course of all their lives forever.
